Someone I know is selling his Jeep - asking 2200. Is it worth getting as a second car for shits n giggles? Anything specific I need to look out for on these?

Thinking about buying it and doing it up.

Here are the details.

Full time 4wd (w/4w lo)
Power everything
Kenwood head unit
140K miles
Decent tires
5.2L/ auto
KN cold air intake
Jet Chip
Some type of aftermarket exhaust
Seats good condition, no rips tears or burns
Recently replaced driver side caliper, front pads, battery, water pump, plugs, cap, rotor, wires

Bad stuff:

Needs a headliner, the board is there just not covered
Clear coat peeling
Surface rust on hood
Rust spot on rear pass door
Driver door panels need some work

How much would a decent paint job cost? :hmm:

Decent paint job at least the cost of the truck. With the various rust on it you'll never get paint to hold unless a lot of work is done taking it down to bare metal and $500 maco won't be doing that. If you get it forget about its paint, there's nothing you can do.

sounds like its pretty up to date on maintenance.

the trannys can be a problem with the V8.

the tranny in mine was rebuit at about 165K.

The price isn't any special imo. See them all the time for around that and in better shape. The regular cherokee is better.

eh, the interior on the regular cherokee is utterly terrible

After the refresh in '97 I think it's not that bad. Anyways, it's a jeep. I'd prefer it if my cherokee had a vinyl floor and drain plugs so I could hose out the interior. Having carpets and stuff just gets in the way.

The viscous coupling transfercase and the rear axle are weak points. That engine will give terrible gas mileage.

yeah it got better, the only 97+ I've been in recently was a classic, so it was old school, tweed, and not very comphy

my jeep gets to me work when I dont want to/can't ride :p

and I haul a trailer with it on occasion, so comfort is nice :awe:

The front seats in the XJ are really comfortable. I've had other people comment on them too

On an older car like that, condition (not just exterior but interior, how it was driven, etc etc) makes all the difference in the world. If you don't mind the paint aggravation and you trust the friend I'd buy it, if not then pass.
