My wife's ford escort had trouble with the exhaust pipe. i took it into Midas and they told me it needed a new catalytic converter they wanted to charge me $585 to do it.

i took it to another place and they sad the converter was fine. but there was a hole in a section of pipe. they said they could replace that pipe for $50.

they had to drill a new hole for the o2 sensor.

This was a week ago today. Well last night the check engine light came on and i took it in this morning to autozone who ran the code. Its P1131 which could mean the o2 sensor from what i have been able to find.

so could they have knocked it out? how much would it cost? and how hard is it to change?

about 3 years ago i had a tune up done and they redid the wires and air filter.

1st. Go back to Midas and call them a bunch of b1tches.
2. If it is an O2 sensor, they're typically around $100. All you need it a wrench or deep socket to get it out.

Don't you need either an open ended wrench or a socket with a notch to let the wire for the O2 sensor out? If I remember right you can get those notched sockets at almost any autoparts store.

Find out of it's before or after the cat. If it's the one after, it may very well be the cat. With the hole in the exhaust, it may have taken in extra oxygen and run excessively hot.

You might want to just clear the code and see if it comes back. Could have been stored before if the hole was interfering with the sensor reading.

What section of pipe was replaced? Before/after the cat?

code p1131 means upstream O2 sensor. Its the one before the cat on the 4 cylinder engines.

I had the same code on my Contour 2.0L and replacing the O2 sensor fixed a fuel economy issue I was having.

I had a '94 'scort for 10 years, the O2 sensor is before the cat on the exhaust manifold. I replaced mine @100K, solved a pinging issue I had at the time. IIRC it only has one O2 sensor (1.9L motor). I wouldn't bring anything to Midas, I just keep hearing one horror story after another..

It was after the cat. i had the cat looked at from the place that fixed it and he said he really doubts that the cat needed to be replaced.

from what it looks like its cheap (found them from $50-69) and easy to change.

last time i take anything ot midas.
