I'm looking for me a vehicle - been doing without for a little while as an insurance matter has cleared. I found a really well kept (by appearance) 2wd Toyota truck 1991 4 cyl 24.

It looks almost new. The clincher is that it has 225,000 miles. The guy only wants 1500 for it. It has a rebuilt transmission (25,000 miles ago).

I figure that a new engine installed is only 2000. . . so if I run it for another year. . . 6 months whatever - then replace the engine with one of those Autozone 3 year unlimited mile reman engines - then I'd be sitting pretty for all under 3500 dollars. . .

Reasoning flawed?

That engine will run for a while longer.
Since it is 18 years old with 225,000 miles I suspect that you'll have other things to worry about, not just an engine.

You didn't consider labor to install your replacement engine either.

Here is a list of the work that has recently been put into it:
New tranny
New water pump
New alternator.
Radiator flush and seal.

I did consider the labor, in fact called a mechanic. The replacement engine is around 1500. The labor the mechanic quoted was around 600. So around 2000. . ..

What do you guys think, go for it or pass?

Weren't those things rust buckets? It may look fine on the surface, but be sure to check the wheel wells and whatnot to make sure there isn't any hidden rust. If it's pretty much rust free, it doesn't sound like a horrible deal, but it's still an old vehicle with high mileage. Maybe you can get it for $1000 or $1200?
