On the way from college today i saw a nice looking BMV for sale, and i swear that on the windsheild it had V-12 in clear white letters on it. How the heck is this possible? They didnt have a price on the car but i am assuming they want a pretty penny for it.. i would love to get one but have no clue how a 12 cylinder engine could be in there? anyone got any ideas on how this could be? thanks

Almost certainly an 850, but goddamn that car would be a nightmare to own.

Absolutely gorgeous cars though.

Sounds like if anything went wrong with the engine it'd cost as much as the car to get fixed :p

The 850 had a V12.

I think it was kind of small though. Not much bigger than an american small block V8 for total displacement. Hardly a little wussy engine, but it's not like a 10L V12 or anything that massive, I don't think.

They are gorgeous cars, even today 10 years after production.

IIRC they are basically two V6's connected together, designed so if one dies the other can keep running, allowing the car to limp home.

When you think about it, though, 300 HP from a 5.0L V12 is pathetic - And it gets 12/19 mpg.

For God's sake, get a Z28 if you want power. It would be cheaper to buy, operate, insure, and it would be faster to boot.

yeah, but this is a touring coupe, it probably does around 1500 rpms@120mph maybe 2000rpms max. :D

I want a 1992-1999 Mercedes 600SEL/S600 in the worst way... Then squeeze 575bhp/585ft lbs out of it with some help from RENNtech (over $50,000 worth of help;))

You're right.

The 50 in the 850 model number is 5.0 liters (right around 300 c.i.)

With BMW, the first number is the "series" - 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 from smaller to larger and the second two numbers are (usually) the displacement in tenths of a liter.

They also made/make the 750i sedan. From everything I have ever heard the BMW V-12 is nothing but a money pit. A friend's father had one (in a 750i) and seriously contemplated having it stolen because of its insane lack of reliability and the cost of repairs. In at least one instance the car broke down before he had gotten out of the dealer's parking lot from the last repair.

Uhm, its two I-6 joined at the crank. As such, everything is redundant. Two ignition systems, double the electronics, etc. Its a royal PITA to work on. The electronics are way too advanced for its time. My friend is a BMW mechanic. He despises working on those cars. If I were you, I'd look for a 840 if you want one of those coupes.

Its nice but the V12's sucked. BMW's best engine is their inline 6's. My dad has one that has 270,000 miles on it and doesn't use oil or anything. At the BMW shop they warned me about buying an 850 once myself.

I remember the good old days when the Mustang had a 5.0 motor and around 220 hp so it seems fine to me.

BMW's first modern V12 appearned in 1988 or so with the 750il. It was the first BMW to feature digital throttles, and I've heard that those go bad every 100K miles at the cost of $12K each. The engine block itself is very strong, but the electronics on BMWs tend to go first.

Agreed, I just bought a 735i (3.5L i6) 2 weeks ago. When I was shopping for one, there were several with 170k-250k miles described as 'runs like new'
Mines only at 97k... impressive power, silky smooth, and its got a nice torque curve.
I wanna put a dinan chip in there if I can find one for it :D
