Found a 1989 Volvo 780 Bertone in the area for sale $3500. I would probably buy it if I was not married, but do not need the headache from the wife or the car. There were only around 6000 sold in the states though do not understand why this car is not worth more. Car seems to be in decent shape for the pictures, though the AC does not blow. Whats your take on the Volvo 780 Bertone? I think its a unique car.

Some cars are worth nothing.
There are rare Saturns as well (I like Saturns) and no one gives a shit at all. Makes me sad they go to the wreckers or are sold for parts, etc.

I love my old Volvos too, but I don't know the exact spec on that particular car.

I wouldn't bother. It reminds me of the Mustang II King Cobras - they had flashy trim and interesting names, but generally aren't worth crap. Cars need more than just rarity to make them worth something; combine rarity with great performance or otherwise unheard of features and THEN you have something that's collectible.

My dad has the earlier Bertone 262 coupe in manual spec, pretty unique car but the V6 motor is terrible. Volvo's best motor for eons was their nearly indestructible and relatively efficient 4-banger.

That said, I think the 780 Bertone is cool, but I'd only do one if I could do an LS1 motor/tranny swap, which has been done (at least I know with LT1, not 100% sure on LS1 but it's not insanely different) and it would certainly be a lot more reliable. The remaining worries would be the electronics really, but that's par for the course for 20+ year old cars with gizmos, particularly imports.

Yeah thought it was pretty cool car (is why i posted here), though not worth the headache. To think this car was over 40k in 1989. Wow!!

They aren't worth more because the PRV V6 used in them cars was absolutely horrible. It was a worthless, unreliable, overweight, underpowered lump of an engine.

The rarer models with the turbocharged I4 would be a better choice, but it's still not fast enough or good-handling enough to really be a desirable car.
