HI THERE. I HAVE AN 89' HONDA ACCORD LXi WITH THE 2.0 LITRE EFI ENGINE. IT HAS 277,000 MILES. I DRIVE 180 MILES A DAY TO GO TO AND FROM WORK. IT HAS THE AUTOMATIC TRANNY IN IT. I AM NEW TO HONDAS, AS I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A MITSUBISHI AND DODGE SHADE TREE MECHANIC LEARNER.
I JUST DID AN OIL CHANGE ON THE HONDA. I DROVE IT UP ON PLASTIC RAMPS SO ALL THE OIL WILL DRAIN OUT OF THE DRAIN PLUG. I LET IT DRAIN FOR AN HOUR LETTING EVERY DROP OUT OF THE PAN. I THEN CHANGED THE FILTER, AND EVEN FILLED THE FILTER 3/4 OF THE WAY UP TO HELP PRIME THE FILTER. I PUSHED THE CAR OFF THE RAMPS TO HAVE ACCURATE DIPSTICK READING. I PUT A TOTAL OF 4 QUARTS IN JUST AS THE INTERNET INFO. GAVE ME. I STARTED THE CAR AND RAN IT FOR A COUPLE MINUTES. I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL AND IT'S WAY OVERFULL. MY QUESTION FOR ALL OUT THERE IS WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THAT? I AM NEW TO HONDAS AND WILL ACCEPT ANY AND ALL INFO. ON HONDAS. I HAVE STUDIED HOW TO READ THE CODES, AND REPAIRED SOME STARTING ISSUES.....A HONDA WILL NOT START WITH A BAD ENGINE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR........EVEN TRYING STARTING FLUID...LOL....I AM VERY CURIOUS AS TO WHY I HAVE AN OVERFUL DIPSTICK READING. THANK YOU AHEAD OF TIME FOR ANY AND ALL TIPS ANYONE CAN GIVE ME.

I have / had 3 of these models ... 87 Accord Sedan, 89 Sedan & Coupe.

Yea, I love these cars. A lot. The last of the Honda iron blocks (aluminum head).

A-Series, baby!

Just great cars in general.

Here's what you do with these things:

Prime your filter.

Throw the rest of the 4 quart amount in the engine.

Good: Prime Filter, put remainder of 4.0qt in engine.
Bad: Put 4.0qt in engine, then prime filter.

The oil pan holds 3.7qt, with filter change it takes 4.0qt on the dot.

A little bit over max isn't gonna hurt you in any noticeable manner. From between the low mark and the max mark on the dip stick, if you have 25% of that extra, I wouldn't worry. Been there, done that. If you have midway and above then yea I'd probably get off my lazy ass and drain a little out.

Next time try not to use all caps. ;)

Major word of advice since you have an auto 86-89 Accord ... don't use anything other than Honda's automatic fluid. If you DO, Dexron II is OK. However, it's not produced anymore. An alternative is Kendall Classic, which works fine. Might have to have it shipped to you.

Damn shame Kendall Dexron II can't be gotten a hold of anymore, it was like magic fluid for Honda AT's, sometimes even revitalizing a Honda AT you could have sworn was toast.

For the love of all that is holy, do not use Valvoline Maxlife Dexron-whatever in there ... you will #&$! it up.

But yea, anyway, enjoy the car, and for all things related to your ride check out 3geez.com

I thought everyone knew only use Honda ATF and Honda PS fluid? Luckily my current Honda has an MT and electric PS so no more proprietary fluids for me!
