The gas tank needs to be painted. It has an exhaust leak, which according to the owner "just means it runs louder than normal". I've read that if it is big leak, it could be troublesome, but a small one isn't much to worry about.

Other than that, it runs fine and just had the chain, sprockets, and brakes replaced. 15xxx miles.

Is this a good deal?

You can figure that any running motorcycle is worth about a grand. Unless the rest of the bike is really rough it's not a bad deal. I'd try to get him to knock a couple hundred bucks off to fix the exhaust leak. You can easily spend $400 for an aftermarket pipe for an older bike...if you can even find one. How are the tires and battery? Figure another $300 minimum for 2 tires and $60 for a battery if it hasn't been looked after.

Well it was initially $1500 and I got him to bring it down to $1000.

I'm just on the fence now, about to jump but still clinging in case I'm making a mistake.

It really depends on your market, but I'd bet you can do better. JulesMaximus is right that any running bike will pretty much be worth $1k, but there are various conditions of running bikes, it just might take some serious searching to find the exception deal. Nevertheless, if you like the bike and the price go for it!

For reference, I just bought a 2001 Katana 600 w/ 26k miles for $1,700 and I saw a pristine (not 1 scratch!) 1990 Katana 1100 advertised for several weeks at $1,100.

Just a couple (that I would consider) from my local CL:

Holy snaps those things are cheap.

I'm definitely going to spend more time searching.
