How many movies were based loosely on 1984? I know Equilibrium is pretty close, V for Vendetta shows some similar traits and I know there were some more.

Loosely based?

Brazil.
Gattica.
Minority report.
Logans run.

Heck, anything where the not-too-distant future is less than a Utopia.

I'm sure there are a lot. 1984 is a classic novel! Parts of a movie I saw recently reminded me of that book. Logan's Run def.!

I've never seen Brazil, was it good? I bought Minority Report...terrible mistake (only good the first and second time). Gattaca...amazing movie. I don't even own it. :(

IIRC, there were two movies made directly from the book. One was quite old (B&W?) and the other is moderately recent. Has anyone seen it?

1984 is a classic, a book that brought an entire theme to the world. I'm sure there's absolutely no way we can count the number of movies that have been made that are loosely based on the dystopia/totalitarian control state theme.

Brazil was a cheaply made movie, with a twisted, over dramatic view of 1984.
Not too bad, not too great.

How does a movie suddenly suck on the third viewing?
No more suprises?

I've had some pleasant experiences with watching suspenceful movies many years later. I dont remember many things and its fun to be thrilled all over again.

Equilibrium also owes a lot to Brave New World.

Too bad Ultraviolet was such a weak follow up movie for the director :(

Actually, come to think of it, Logan's Run seems more loosely based on The Giver!

I have seen the newest version of Logan's Run made! I didn't know there was an older one!

I have a fairly decent memory, and it's a natural thing for me to automatically go over the entire plot within the first 5 minutes. The only movies I've been able to watch many times are The Matrix (first one only) and Equilibrium.

I watched that movie the other day. I can't really say any more about it. However, Milla Jocovich's (I butchered that, I bet) character reminded me a lot of Equilibirum. =D

Haven't seen Brave New World, IIRC.

EDIT: IMDb says it was a TV series?
EDIT2: Ah, nevermind. Shows it as a movie aswell.

i went to the wiki link after i posted in order to verify.... it also confirms that 'the island' had 1984 elements.

Starship Troopers was also on that list. Give that a few thoughts. Just because it has some totalitarian elements doesn't make it like 1984.

Starship Troopers is a little like Star Trek.
Earth is a little more strict than the 20th century but everybody is happy and lives well.
The only time we're under stress is when another race wants to conquor us.

But movies like Blade Runner, Brazil and such show a society that is overall very unhappy, but needs the big brother goverment just to survive.

Anyone ever seen Code 46?

They dont get too deep into it during the movie, but that concept of the future is actually a mix. Some place are a post apocolyptic wasteland, others are pleasant little Edens.

I need to pick up the book one day.

I believe that Starship Troopers may have been based on... wait for it... Starship Troopers (though loosely).

'starship troopers' is more like 'ender's game,' but it probably does have some 1984 elements.

pretty much any futuristic sci-fi flick will have a nod to 1984 because 1984 is one of the most quintessential anti-totalitarian books.
