1983 Honda Civic with 76K for $400. Decent deal?

1983? Dude you get a 90s buick/ford/whateves thats gonna be way more reliable and safer than a cold war civic

But yeah, that would work and it doesn't sound like too bad of a deal... some of it depends on the car's condition. I wouldn't pay much more for it though.
 
actually it's a pretty good deal. although i wouldn't even want to be caught in a late 90's ford escort... it just makes you look cheap.
 
I would buy it DB, since its just for three months. As long as you can test drive it on the highway, see how it handles going 80mph.
 
Unless you like the inner workings of Minuki carburetor or it is running perfectly already you might be better off with something else.

 
for three months sounds like a good deal. However, I would be wary of the 76k readings. I'm not saying it can't be true, but odometer tampering FTL.

I won't be driving it @ 80 MPH and it handled 60 fine. It started RIGHT up and the clutch was grabby and the tranny shifted smoothly. Tires are very new.

The lady I'm potentially buying it from is about 55 and (if you believe her) it was her mother's car who just passed away. <shrug>
 
$400 for a honda with 76k miles that has a good clutch and transmission seems to be in good shape? I think it's a good deal, but I drive an Accord with 188k miles and love it.

Is the mileage correct, or is it one of those older 5 digit odometers, not sure when Honda went to 6 digit, but I am pretty sure it was early. As crackrabbit said, carbed cars can be a bit fickle, but depending on the body condition this could be a great deal. Any fuel injected car in this price range is going to have a bad transmission, engine, wrecked body/interior, or any combination of the three.

Have you looked at the car yet?

:thumbsup: sounds pretty good then. The carbs used on them and mitsubishis of that era were rather finicky pieces of equipment and hard to tune properly. If it is running fine already and you will only have it 3 months go for it. 🙂
 
Yes, IMO it's a really good offer. You can't find a better used car for $400, especially one that's reliable as hell and gets excellent gas mileage. And 76K is nothing.

 
If the car seems to be running fine then that's a fine deal. You should be able to sell it for what you paid for it at the end of the three months, too.

That's what I thought too, but the car drives remarkable smooth for a car that old and I'm inclined to believe the mileage. <shrug> Even at 176K, I would still be tempted to buy it for three months.
 
eh.. you never know. If it was owned by an old lady on her death bed, chances are its been a while since shes put alot of miles on it...

Wouldn't be hard to get more than that for it, as long as the car is taken care of with basic things like oil changes, they're going to last for ages. I'm far from a Honda fanboy, but those things can handle a lot more mileage than 76k, or even 176k.
 
I actually think its a decent deal, Dain. If you are just A-Bing for 3 more mos before shipping out, change the oil once upon receipt (in case they didnt) and it should hold up.
