It mainly happens when the engine is cold, but when the engine hit the higher rpm's I hear a ticking sound that (to me) most resembles hitting a wrench against a solid piece of metal. It doesn't happen as often when the engine warms up. Any ideas on what it could be?

With a car that old, the camshaft and lifers are very likely shot. Lifters can make a ticking noise. I would also suggest you run some lighter weight motor oil for a few hours, then drain and refill it with correct oil. That will clear up any sludge that may be preventing oil from properly getting to the top end of the motor. Also, if I recall correct, the MB of that era, especially diesels, had mechanical fuel injection. It is very possible the injectors are in need of service or adjustment (no easy task on that system)

Hopefully it's the lifters. Research before you do, since I have very little experience with diesels, but Marvel's Mystery Oil added to the engine oil worked wonders on my Mustang's original lifters.

you need to adjust the valves.

Do yourself a favor and check out some of the mercedes enthusiast forums. Most have a section specifically for the diesel W123 cars (76-85 200/300 series).

They were a tremendous help to me when I had my 84 300D

New cap, rotors and wires and it'll be good as new.

The OP has a Mercedes 300D ... It is a Diesel
No Cap, No Rotor, No Plugs or Plug Wires (except the Glow Plug for startup)

Rocker arm gap clap. You need to take it in and have all the rocker arms checked and re-gaped, and then tap slap go bye bye.
