I recently purchased a 1960s amc rambler. It drives and runs fine, howrver, after i left and parked it at home, my girlfriend pulled the emergency brake, attempted to reset it, and it failed to properly. The car now will only go backwards, which i found out the hard way. I am trying to relieve pressure on the parking brake but am having trouble identifying what im looking at. There appears to be a slot in the drivers side floor with access to a nut which i presume would relieve pressure to the unit, but i am also not sure what im looking at. Any information would help

drum brakes on the rear? you should start there and find the cables that pull on the lever that sticks out the back of the backing plate, follow those cables along the frame rails up to the lever on the front that connects to the ( if i remember correctly) ratcheting foot pedal and pull to release thing. problems could include the lever and springs in the rear drums, the cables themselves rusted in the sleeves, the spring on the foot pedal or the release handle not pulling the pal out at the ratchet mechanism on the foot pedal.

the parking brake has nothing to do with the hydraulic brake system.

also, the engine should easily be able to overcome the parking brake in reverse or forward, so i think you may have more than one problem. the parking brake system is extremely simple and would impede movement in both directions equally.

Thanks, I was looking towards the front end of the assembly as the possible problem but I do need to get into the rear. I will update if this works or not!
