I've got a 1900XT serving me quite well with BF2, R6:V, Oblivion, and GRAW2 @1920x1200. I think the 8800 will offer an incremental increase in performance, but from what I remember, you're looking at a $100-$200 price difference.

If you're coming from an AGP/6800 based system, a 1950XT will give you some really good performance gains.

With that said, I'd recommend stretching for the 640MB 8800GTS, since that'll future proof you for awhile. There seems to be some games scheduled later this year that'll make upgrading for me a good idea (planning on doing an eVGA Step-Up to an 8800GTX from the 8600GTS I purchased for my secondary computer. The 1900XT will be going into there).

If you don't got the $$$, you can go 1950XT, but it may leave you wanting more when DX10 finally gets settled out.

Because of my rig, I'm still playing games from '04 and '05.

There are lots of games from '05-'07 I haven't played. So I don't anticipate playing and DX10 games for probably another year or 2.

Plus DX10 isn't due out for a while. right?

DX10 has been out since the release of Windows Vista in Jan 07. The DX10 hardware has been out since the release of the 8800s in Nov 06. There are a few DX10 games available, but nothing to write home about.

Also, the mid and low end DX10 hardware is anemic.

DX10 hardware is a joke right now. I got a X1950xt for $167 and it gets the job done just fine for now. Nvidia can't do better for the price.
