Maybe this fire-sale on that CPU is a foretelling that there is going to be a $500 16C/32T option among the Ryzen 3rd-Gen CPUs for AM4 platform. Here's hoping!

Yeah, I don't see this as a hot deal at all, I'm afraid. This is first-gen Threadripper and every reliable - and non-reliable - source says there's going to be a Ryzen 9 3850X with 16 cores / 32 threads and it'll sell for $499 / $549.

Either way, the IPC improvements alone would be worth the $49. And it debuts for $499, then you've lost nothing and gained everything. The motherboard premium eats into the value as well.

That said... its only four (4) days until Computex. If Dr. Lisa Su doesn't talk about 16-core Ryzens, then you might want to consider this. But, if you consider that Threadripper was pushed back, it looks like all signs really are pointing to higher core court Ryzens.

One thing to consider, though, is 3rd-Gen Ryzen CPUs, if they do manage to shoe-horn a 16C/32T monster into AM4 socket (and I really hope that they do), then memory bandwidth from only dual-channel memory operations may become a bottleneck, whereas it wouldn't so much on ThreadRipper. This may be mitigated somewhat by higher DRAM bus clock speeds on 3rd-Gen Ryzen. (Up to DDR4-5000+, hopefully.)

Yeah, I think we're actually of the same mindset, but I failed to broadcast it.

With Threadripper, you get 64 PCI-E lanes and quad-channel memory. I'm going to need to build a deep learning machine here in about a year or so; that means Ryzen won't really be in the cards for me because I'll need at least 48 PCI-E lanes (planning on running 3 RTX Titan, or whatever'll be available a year from now), leaving the last 16 open for NVMe SSDs, which I'd like to run at least two in RAID-0, and maybe 3 depending on which motherboard I settle on.

With DDR4-5000, you're looking at 80 GB/s in dual channel mode. That's knocking pretty close on the door of DDR4-2933 in quad channel, which is 93 GB/s.

Jesus Larry, as I'm going through this, you're talking me into getting this Threadripper... Hot deal for a data scientist after all.
