South Sudan Joins UN As 193rd Member

Although South Sudan is now expected to control more than 75 percent of what was Sudan's daily oil production, it has no refineries and southern oil must flow through the north's pipelines to reach market. The young nation is also one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with only a couple of dozen miles (kilometers) of paved roads, very low literacy, and a lack of medical facilities.

Status of MDGs in Sudan in 2010
Adult literacy rate 36.70%
Estimated poverty incidence (% of total population) 45%
Prevalence of child malnutrition (underweight for age; % under 5) 48%
Proportion of population below minimum level of dietary energy consumption 47%
Under-5 mortality rate (per 1,000) 381
Infant mortality rate (per 1,000 live births) 131
One-year-olds immunized against measles 20.2%
Access to improved drinking water source (% of population) 48.3%
Access to improved sanitation (% of population) 6%

IMHO, South Sudan have the potential to become a great nation if it know how to manage its resource, but demographically it indicated that the country is a perfect place for corruptions & war to strive.

They're sitting on mountains of natural resources - this could go great and turn them into something like one of the gulf states. I'm optimistic - after years of getting screwed by others, hopefully they'll be able to work together and make something of this huge gift they got.

They're just getting started as a nation. Give them a generation before you pronounce them dead weight. If the situation hasn't improved, then its a fair assessment.

They chose to become a country on their own, to my mind, they're better suited to the UN than some of the regimes around the world.

It is true that 99% of the population voted to become independent, but I question the validity of the election. How many people were courser into voting for independent, what other method of cheating were employed, and how many people understand what they voted for since the literacy rate is only 36.7%.

IMHO, there is a greater force behind this "independent" movement, and one reason is that it is much easier to take advantage of illiterate people.

If anyone has paid in blood for their independence, it is South Sudan. Their civil war(s) bled them, badly, for generations.

Indeed, but no worse than a few of the other sovereign countries in the region.

I wish them the best of luck.
