Is the WMV-HD the format that will become the standard compression for HD? (or are there other competing formats right now?)

Second, I know that at the moment, HD is 1920x1080i, are there plans for 1920x1080p? Or would that just take too much space and processing power at the moment?
 
Is there a requirement to encode differently for Interlaced and Progressive scan or is that simply the up to the device it's being displayed on? I thought something could be encoded a single time and display using either method (i vs. p), am I wrong?
