You have to watch out because the DVI interface on an HDTV looks like the Interface on the computer they are in fact different despite the cable being compatible and you could potentially do damage to your HDTV if you do refresh rates not supported by your HDTV. Also the 1080P spec is not typical on HDTV's. Next gen it may begin to show up but current gen its rarely found.
Its safer to have a card like the radeon 9500, 9700, 9800 etc which you can get a component video adapter to do outputs like 720p and 1080i. Which should tell you that these gen cards are capable of outputing 1080 and designed for it. I have done 1080P easily with a Radeon 9500 video card on a high quality monitor.
HDMI is just the industry changing the HD interface connection. First there was 1394 interface then DVI now its HDMI. Hopefully it will end there.
The 7800 is overkill but I would imagine its supported.
DO NOT BUY THE XGI CARDS even though they say they can do HD they bite.
Ok so your probably looking to play games on your HDTV. This is Bad. I tried this the problem is nearly every game is written with 4:3 aspect ratio and I have not seen any games for the PC written with widescreen modes. So your probably going to ruin your HDTV by having those gray or black bars on the side.
I would recommend getting a Radeon 9500 if you plan on connecting the PC to the HDTV and getting the component video adapter. This is really a video 2d solution because as I said games really arent written with widescreen in mind. The overscan and 4:3 aspect ratio doesnt make it a gaming candidate.
If you dont want the PC in your living room get the IODATA linkplayer HD dvd player for 250.00
If you want to play games on a widescreen HDTV get the X-box 360 when it comes out. The current Xbox will do it and games are written with widescreen modes in mind.
If you want to just play games in big screen get a projector.
