1920x1080 on 1080p TV?

So I have a laptop with an ATI X1400, and currently have it attached via VGA to a 50" 1080p LCD TV.

So is it possible to get 1920x1080 resolution on the TV screen? Every time I change the res on display 2 in the control panel it just resets back to a lower, stretched out resolution.

Have you tried to setup the laptop so that the 50" 1080P LCD TV is the primary display? This could also be a driver issue. Are there any other video output interfaces on the laptop?

Either your TV can't accept the full 1920x1080 through VGA or the video card doesn't support that high of a resolution to a secondary display.

Try using the TV as the only display and see what happens.

Ok I will try this, I had always assumed that 1080p implies that it can also do 1920x1080, but I guess it varies.

Would a VGA to HDMI cable work? Does such a thing even exist? Maybe an addon video card? Unfortunately the laptop only has VGA, but the TV has tons of inputs.

But I think is more likely to be a limitation of the TV rather than the video card or drivers, but I will try re-installing and updating and see if that works.

I've noticed this as well and have no idea why it's the case. 1920x1080 works fine through hdmi/dvi but I max out at 1280xsomething using VGA on TVs.

the X1400 can output to DVI but that is entirely up to the laptop manufacturer. sometimes they put a DVI-I on the notebook, but most just have VGA. Running 1080p video over analog is usually going to result in a hideous picture which is why manufacturers limit the input resolution over VGA.

find a way to get a digital connection to the TV and it will do 1920x1080.

What is your tv Manufacture and model?

My samsung LN37B650 runs great at 1920x1080 on vga for several computers.

When i was looking at specs on several different models of TVs, both plasma and LCD, i found that some just limited video input on the vga. I don't know why; but that was a requirement when i was searching as this TV would be replacing my CRT monitor.

I've read where someone implied it was related to the pixels in some tv panels being wider than on a monitor.. I have no idea if this is true or has any relevance. Just something i heard and wondered if it had anything to do with it myself.

Also have you tried making it the main monitor on your laptop yet? Your laptop probably has a function key that will cycled the displays. You should try cycling them so the lcd on the laptop is off and the TV is on. If your desktop is stretched across the panels or cloned, it may not let it go to 1920x1080, but i would imagine that that laptop wouldn't limit you to a lower resolution with just the TV.

Also another thing to note. If you are using a kvm to switch between computers like i do, it could be the issue. The one i have now doesn't seem to pass the panel information correctly to the computers so if the kvm isn't switched to the panel when booting, it picks an odd resolution and will not let you change it correctly until you restart and stay on that port until the desktop is displayed.
