19" V 22" Monitor for gaming?

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my old Proview 17" monitor but i cant decide which of the two above sizes is best for gaming?
Is it better to run a game at 1600x1200 on a good quality 19" crt or to run it on a 22" crt (bearing in mind thats it's native resolution.

Also would running at 1280x etc look poor on a 22" crt?

I just cant decide between the two sizes at the moment. The Monitors i had in mind were the IIyama 454 Vision Master Pro 19",IIyama 513 and 514 model at 22".All are at .24 Ap.

The main reason for the switch is the imminent arrival of a new graphics card and i would like to play my games in a higher res than i can manage now.

Rome Total war and all the other usual suspects.

Any opinions and recommendations gratefully received.

Regards....

I run 1280x1024 100% of the time on my 21". I don't see how the difference between 21 and 22 would make it look any worse or better. 16x12 will be very very small and constrained on a 19"

Ok so is a 22" overkill for gaming when you can run both at the same resolution?
The 'constrained' part was what i was getting at really.
I imagine 1280 would look better on a 19" monitor and 1600 better on a 22".
That is what iam trying to gauge at the moment.

In my opinion your assesment is correct. "I imagine 1280 would look better on a 19" monitor and 1600 better on a 22". "

Has anyone else made the switch from one to the other or who has tried both and found certain constraints to using one or the other at certain resolutions?
At the moment iam leaning toward the larger 22" Iiyama though iam still not certain why!?

If its in your budget then just go with the bigger one ...Im sure they will both be fine for gaming. I currently own a NEC/Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB 19? and its the best CRT I have ever sever seen. I can only imagine the 22" version. *drool*

I had a Viewsonic 22" Professional until a couple weeks ago. Hard rainstorm and unnoticed leak in the ceiling killed it :brokenheart:

I usually ran 12 X 10, sometimes 16 X 12. With a refresh rate of 120mhz (10 X 7 didn't look good to me on a monitor that size)

Now I'm using a 17" flat screen cart at 10 X 7 and a refresh of about 75mhz :disgust:

The 22" was godawful heavy to move.

If you've got the room and $'s for the bigger one, yeah they're pretty impressive. But I'm a little ambivilent about strongly recommending the bigger size cuz it seems once I get into the game, I'm so immersed, I don't really notice.

Actually, I'm now trying to decide for myself whether the next one will be a 19" or 22."

Thanks very much lads, you have given me some more food for thought.Damned sorry to hear about you losing that Viewsonic Fern,a real shame to lose such a nice piece of kit, especially under those circumstances 8(

From what i gather the NEC/Mitsubishi monitors are reckoned by many to be the best but at the moment they are about £100 out of my price range and yeah i would love to see the 22" in action also 8)

The Iiyama's fall into my budget:
514 £400 - 22"
513 £360 - 22"
454 £260 - 19"

and from what i have read have a pretty good reputation.
I have more or less decided upon the 513 and will probably order one after a little more reading.
Thanks again chaps for your input....

i ran a 21" for awhile at 1600x1200 but wanted some desk space so i downsized to a 19". i can run 1600 but it's just not as comfy as 1280, which is what i'm at now. it's just a little crowded.

A long time ago I had the same battle between upgrading from a 15" to a 17" or 19". I couldn't decide for a long time, but ended up going with the lower quality 19 inch monitor. In retrospect, I am happy with my choice. However, I don't know if I would need bigger than a 19". I have used 21" monitors, and because I sit so close to the monitor already I find 21" overkill if it comes at the expense of qualtiy.

Thanks Fisher and Bovinicus, you have got me thinking about space and about how close i have to sit to the monitor.
Games like Rome total war would probably be quite comfortable to sit and watch up close on a big monitor where as iam starting to think that the faster games will maybe be a little more uncomfortable.
Does anyone who plays FPShooters prefer one to the other?

I think in the end it will come down to me settling this with the flick of a coin....

Certainly a bigger monitor is always nice. However, at a certain point it does become moot. I am happy with my 19", and I play primarily FPS games. You should goto Best Buy and try to sit about as close as you do in reference to your monitor at home. Give yourself an idea of what it is like with both monitors. Also, take into consideration the difference in quality. A slight tradeoff of quality for size isn't a bad idea, but totally sacrificing quality at the expense of size is not. Make sure the tradeoff is reasonable.

I have had my 22" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060U for 2 years now and I love it.I also went through the 15" -->17" -->19" upgrades over the years(mostly NEC & Sony) and I have to say that this is the best monitor I've owned sofar ... by a long shot. Most excellent quality and nice real estate onscreen.
Only con is the weight in my case. It's heavy.Size-wise I have no issues since I have a rather large Ikea Jerker computer desk and theres plenty real estate on it.I prefer the 1152 x 864 16K @ 120Mhz setting.Funny thing is that setting was my preferred setting on my 19"ers as well, except for the refresh rate.
Picture quality & size far outweigh any LCD's.I don't think LCD's are yet fast enough(refresh) to be good for gaming. Not to mention picture quality.

Wow..this thread has just reappeared again out of nowhere 8)
Many thanks everyone for your continued input.

I'am still waiting for my new graphics card to arrive before i get the monitor and i'am still undecided about what to get.All the monitors iam looking at have an aperture g of .24 so iam hoping the picture quality is more or less equal.

Iam constantly hearing very good things about the NEC's and i think it will come down to the NEC/MIT V IIyama.
The NEC is a good deal more expensive so i guess i'll have to try and gauge whether it's worth the extra money.

Is there a big difference between the standard NEC 22" and the Pro version as there seems to be a big price difference?

Appreciate all the replies and help...Regards.

Well, games will look fine at 1600x1200 on a 19". But if you're going to just play around in windows then stick with 1280x1024. To each his own. By the way, wouldn't 1280x960 be better than 1280x1024 because 1280x960 has same aspect ratio (4:3) as 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200 etc?
