I currently have, and am selling, a benq 19" monitor. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=45&threadid=1509910&enterthread=y I want to get a new monitor, 20", but am not sure to go with the Viewsonic VP201b or Dell 2001fp, or the Dell 2005fpw. On the widescreen one, its about an ich and a half less tall screen than my 19", and I'm not sure if that will make it seem smaller to me. Plus, if I play a game that only goes in fullscreen, then the screen might seem really small. However, it seems that alot of people like the widescreen much more than the full screen, so I'm not sure which to buy.

FWIW, I have and love the 2005FPW, and I've personally used a 2001FP as well. You can set up nearly any game to use widescreen resolutions; the only 4:3 content i'd ever watch is probably SD (analog) TV and/or DVD's of said TV (The Simpsons, mainly). I haven't really done any of that yet though, so I don't know if stretching it would look good or not.

I guess it depends on what all you intend to use the monitor for, but I'm quite happy with mine. 🙂

Can you switch the 2005fpw to crop and run in fullscreen? If you can, what size monitor would that be equivlent to?

Yes, you can usually set the scaling in your video drivers. or I believe you could just zoom out from the monitor's menu itself. As far as what size it's equivalent to when cropped to a 4:3 aspect ratio...I'm not sure.

Slightly larger than a 17" LCD.

Yes, you can change that with the monitor controls, it makes it about 17" - 18" viewable than.

Since widescreen is rarely used, pretty much only for movies, and few games, I'd stick with a 4:3 ratio monitor. But that's me. 😉

Widescreen is cool; it's more pleasing to the eyes since you can use more of your peripheral vison during games, movies, etc. Also, with a good enough resolution, you can put two documents side-by-side. On my laptop it's 1920x1200, and I can use either 2 pages side-by-side in Word, or one page of Word and a webpage, or two webpages together. Makes for very convenient working (and gaming... and movies...)
