19" or 20" WS Monitor?

So I'm looking to get a new monitor, and can't decide between the 19" or the 20" widescreen monitors. The 1" accounts for the resolution difference of 1440x900 to 1680x1050.

Higher resolution is generally better, but I also play games occassionally.

I don't have a high-end video card (rig in sig), and play things like CS:S and Warcraft III, but try out new demos occassionally. Since I'll almost always want to run at or near (since some games don't support WS) native resolution to keep things sharp, should I spring for a larger 20", or maintain gameplay fps on newer games with a 19"?

Is there any particular model that may sway me in a certain direction?

The 20"ws are typically better quality than the 19"ws, and may even have Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling, which will definitely help if you are planning on gaming at resolutions such as 1280x1024 or 1024x768.

As a gamer, I guess you won't be too worried about getting a TN panel, but I'll leave detailed recommendations to the experts who know their PVA from their MVA :)

Since you said you play games only occasionally, you should definitely go for 20". A 19" WS just isn't very good for productivity. You really do not want to lose those 150 pixels of vertical resolution.

I'm a gamer and I recently got an Acer Al2051W from Newegg for $200. It's great. My games aren't noticeably distorted if I need to play them at 1024x768 either. 1680x1050 is incredibly crisp, though.

That's awesome, I was just looking at that panel after reading the LCD thread http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2049206&enterthread=y.

But then I got near the middle of it and they say it has a high input lag?! Do you notice anytype of lag? Otherwise I might just jump on this non-TN panel.

There's a little ghosting if your eyes are good at sensing movement (I can sense it, I've been playing FPS's a long time). But it really doesn't detract from the experience. It's more like motion blur than anything.

Edit: If by input lag you mean it takes awhile for things to register on-screen; then no, I haven't seen that.

Well the price of the AL2051W jumped up to $290 with $16 shipping.... good thing I jumped on two a few weeks ago when it was $199 with free shipping.

Yeah I just upgraded from a 19 inch ws to 20 a couple of weeks ago. The 19 wasn't bad in fact I liked the text size on it but for some things I missed the height of my old 19 inch crt. I orginally went with a 22 inch ws lcd but found the image looked to stretched out so 20 seems to be the sweet spot for now. Yeah the text is a little smaller but it's much more crisp and if you really need to in Vista you can set a custom dpi to make up the difference.
