If you can afford a decent 19", go with that for sure. If all you can afford is a crappy 19", or a decent 17", go with the 17".

Personally I chose to get a 19" (Samsung 900NF), and am extremely happy with it.

A half way decent monitor, I wouldn't get it because there are many monitors out there that are better than this. Especially the Samsung 955DF, with flatscreen and smaller dot pitch, around teh same price too.

Go with the 19" Samsung. They are very good monitors. It's worth spending the extra $100-200 on a better bigger monitor, it'll help in the long run. :)

Oh and that won't make much a difference when you are buying a monitor, hahah but when you are lugging the damm thing up a flight of stairs.....lol....you'd wish your monitor was a bit lighter, lol.

I just upgraded to a 19" monitor a week ago. At first the difference between my old 17" and the new 19" didn't seem very large, but when going into work the next day and using the old Compaq 17" I have there I could really notice the difference. 17" now looks tiny in comparison :).

Consider the Micron 900MX, available at Best Buy for $379. It's a rebranded CTX PR960F, which is CTX's "professional" 19" monitor. It has a flat, FD Trinitron tube which -- according to the specs, at least, should support refresh rates even higher than Sony's G400.
