Much to my surprise after the whole NeoV disaster deal, I was shopping for office supplies at the Redwood City Office Max (CA) and saw a Mirage/Proview 19" PX-982 on display. I took it up, and it rang up at $130, so I adopted it! Then my 17" other monitor on my Dualhead display looked anemic, so I drove by the Mountain View store with the call tag from the other store. Lo and behold, the display 19" monitor was actually a PX-982 also, so it too went home with me! So you guys may want to check again, as it seems that they have these in few places. The SKU on the pull tag is 14247451 N 14, and the model is PX-982. Specs are 1280X1024 , .26mm dot pitch, 17.9" viewable area, built in microphone. I would say it is a good but not great monitor, although you can't really beat the price. I'm running at 800X600 and my eyes love the extra size. Some stores have the PX-982 as the display unit, but only have PX-986's in boxes, which are not on sale. And they don't have the pull tag for the PX-982, but if you give them the SKU, the model number, and they look it up in the computer, and show them the plate on the back of the display that says PX-982, they will sell it to you.

Good hunting!!!

how old are you.

---this is in no way meant to offend old people (people over the age of 22)---

He did say he was using dual display. That would give him 1600 X 600. That is more real estate than a 1024 X 768.
Good deal also.

for what it is worth,. I picked up the 986 model at my OD here in Cincinnati and it is a pretty decent monitor... .25 pitch.. the controls are kind of a pain, but for $130, who cares...

I'm running 1600x1200 comfortably on my 22" monitor so for a 19" I'd run at least 1280x1024

I haven't tried it yet, but the PX982 monitor I got has
a 1600x1200 maximum resolution printed on the box (and yes it
is the 982, not the 986). The call tag itself said "1280x1024".
Were there different revisions of the PX982, or is the box
just plain wrong...?

I have an older version numbered 968. Never knew the brand but I guess its Mirage (its nice having a plain monitor actually) Its a nice monitor, does 1600x1200@75Hz. Many others in its class only do 65Hz at this res, and to get something that does 85Hz you are talking big bucks. I think mine is about the same as the 982, and I thought it would be nice to have dual head. I went to a $hitload of stores and could not find one of these. Hopefully the 986's will drop in price...I saw many stores had TONS of these. They are marked at $299, but someone told me they ring at $229 now. Maybe if they hit $150 I'll have to ring up credit card debt a little more :)

i had been running 16x12 on my 19" until i got contacts that didn't correct for my astigmatism so now i've dropped down to 1400x1050... get one of these monitors and run at 2800x1050... thats a lot of real estate

i scored one of these PX982 monitors, theyre alright, pretty crusty if you ask me.. After looking at the PX982 then going back to my Viewsonic V775 17", the Viewsonic has way better image quality, but at 130 bux I cant be complaining, the PX982 gets teh job done. And BTW: I had mine running 1920X1600 or something like that. I dont know how I did it , but before i got the Proview drivers for the monitor, Windows set it to Plug & Play Monitor and I saw the option for 1920X1600 so i tried it out and it worked. it looked like $hit but it worked.. oh well hehe
enough rambling, i need to find some more of these monitors and Egay them!

I got two 19" Mirage/Proview from my local OM here (@$130 each). Now, I'm very confused the outside box said PX-982, 0.26 dot pitch. But on the back of monitors said model number PX-986. Manual said like 0.25 dot pitch. Well, I don't know which one I got either PX-982 label as 986 or 986 boxed as 982. Do we have any method to test what actually dot pitch the monitors are? So that I can determine them and post correct info for Fleabay.
BTW, I also use 21" monitor @600x800 caz the small icons really scare me.

Such abuse from all you sharp-eyed youngsters for my low res world view!!!! I should add that I have a dual 19" setup, so 800X600 is really a virtual monitor that is 1600 X 600, which is actually quite a bit of real estate. The monitor will run at 1280 X 1024, and with dualhead, 2560X1024, which is what I am running at right now. But the sharpness sucks, and almost certainly I would go blind at this resolution. There is also a lot of flicker, even tho the refresh rate is 75Hz. 1024 X768 is readable, but is not really sharp, thus the 800 X 600. After a couple of days of using them, I'm not convinced I'll keep them. I like the large screen, but the resolution and clarity is not so great, so maybe they'll go to fleabay. Anyone know what they go for there?

I should add that I must be doing something right in terms of vision, as I was born in the year of Sputnik, yet I still don't need glasses for either reading or distance, (although using these monitors at your suggested resolutions might change that.

:D

thanks for the infor android. I missed this the first time around. I'll go check them out in about 30 minutes. I run a Miitsubishi Diamond pro 2020u at 1792 x 1344. 75hz refresh. I have to admit that without glasses I can barely read this res. I used to have 20/10 vision in both eyes just four years ago.

Wow, you guys are all lucky to upgrade to 19" monitors :) I don't have the time and money to go out and pick one of these up... If anyone could pick one up for me I'd be grateful to pay them a bit, but I am mainly asking if anyone is upgrading their monitor, could you sell me your old one? I'm aiming for a 17"

Thanks
David

PS. I live in LA, so if you are around, we can save on shipping

I got the same deal a week or so ago, Good monitor for the price.

Most 17's still go for $130. Im shocked there are still some left, it was pain to find one when the original deal was posted.

Hi,

I got a boxed monitor (fifth store I tried, found it on the top of one of the shelves alongside three PX-986 boxes). The box says PX-982. The plate on the back says Part no. PX-982 but also says Model "986M". That may be the confusion. I found this site surfing the web and I think it is the spec page for the "model 986":

http://www.skytronik.co.uk/Monitors/proview_986_monitor_19.htm

I agree that it is not the sharpest monitor I have ever bought but it is terrific for $130. Also, the NVidia series of cards use the detonator drivers which contain software brightness and contrast controls which help improve the quality. It enabled me to give my old 17" monitor to my son to replace his piece of crap 13" monitor and now I can use 1280X1024.

I found another OM which had a box labeled PX-982 right below the display model. I have a friend who was looking for one also so I walked out quietly and called her. She went in and looked at the display model and it said PX-982 on the plate; the store clerk went to the manager who said it was a 986. She demanded to see the manager and eventually convinced him that it was a 982 and he should sell it to her and he did so very grudgingly (the clerk who helped her out said he wished he knew). The point of the story, if you want one don't call or ask, go to the store and check the display and walk around and look for boxes (OM stacks the boxes on the top of the shelving); otherwise the store personnel will buy it before you get there.

:( Went to the local officemax. Apparently ones with gateway stores don't sell computers & monitors. I think all the officemaxs in this area are like that. Oh well.

Hi,

No...all the ones in metro Phoenix have Gateway stores. They still stock and display two monitors: a 17" and a 19" (the 986). Sometimes they are on an end cap, sometimes in the middle of an aisle, but they do sell monitors aside from Gateway.

Look around or ask. Also, as I said, check the tops of the aisles (a 19" monitor box will be one of the biggest boxes up there so they are relatively easy to find).

Good luck,

Steve S
