From what I've read on the Planar website they state that the rise is 15ms and the fall rate is 10ms. Is this consistant with the monitors you guys have/seen (huesmann, jamnjk, Perplexer, Hoeboy)??? I wanna make sure that we are comparing apples to apples. Thanks

P.S. I was looking at the CT1904N or CT1904Z (19in)

MrSharky:

The 19" have the rise/fall of 15ms/10ms (25ms TOTAL)...SAME as the PV174 or 17.4" version...for whatever reason, the 18.1 inch version has a longer rise/fall time of 20ms rise 30ms fall...so DOUBLE what the 17.4 OR the 19 or a 50, FIVE-ZERO rise/fall time.

Sure the 18" has S-Video...and if you're playing Xbox or something on there..cool, and going from tv to monitor...it HAS to be stellar in comparison. I'm looking at the PV174 primarily b/c the 19" is just a lot more to blow on a monitor than I want...and I think I'd become even more addicted to my computer if I had a monitor the same size as my tv!! (ok...so I missed out on the Wega deals of long ago).

Anyways...here's the spec's from Planar's site. I bolded where the major differences are. If you feel rambunctious, for more spec's on other monitors...hit the Planar site.

I'd love the 19"...but it's hard to justify dropping the 9 bills on a monitor...6...ok..maybe, different priorities than others, that's all

Just an added note for those of you who are going to purchase one of these with the S-Video option...

The pins on the S-Video input are arranged in a different format than a standard S-Video cable. Planar ships an S-Video cable that will plug into the monitor and work but if you plan on using your PS2 or XBox you will have to find and buy an S-Video coupler to join the two cables together. (could result in a loss of quality) I called Radioshack tonight and the bro that answered the phone said they carried one. So I'll go pick one up tomorrow.

I have no damn idea why Planar would do something like this??? Why not just use a standard S-Video input?
At first I thought Dell had messed up my order and shipped the Z model when I couldn't plug my Playstation's S-Video cable in... but after a couple of seconds I figured out what was goin on.

The Planar with video-input option comes with a special cable with the weird pin configuration you described on one end, and it terminates in a composite plug AND a S-Video plug. I'm pretty sure you can have both a composite source AND a S-Video source plugged in simultaneously (hence the CVBS and SVIDEO toggle)

anyone know how this compares to KDS Rad-9 19" LCD? another thread mentioned that microcenter will have this one for sale this weekened for ~$810. Which one would be better?

Note that I would have to pay tax on this whereas Dell home doesn't collect tax, so pricewise, I think they would be about the same (well, KDS would be about $15 cheaper)

TIA

Here's where I'm at.. I'm headed back to college in August, and really would like an 18 or 19 LCD monitor, but when I wanna play ... say . Q3 and RTCW or CS I don't want to be dissappointed (considering that there are no pictures, that I've seen, on the next showing what ghosting may look like on a Planar or comparible LCD) by the quality. I have an XBox and actually prefer to hook itup to my LCD if possible. I'm not looking to spend no 2 Grand for it either, but from what you guys say the Planar 17 sounds like a shear winner ( I hate carrying around my dang 19" IBM P96 Monitor). I was just hoping for a little bit larger monitor. If you guys have any other suggestion I'm all ears. Thanks

P.S. What do you guys think about this off (PS there's $100 Rebate for it too $699.99)

From what I've read, people have been very satisfied with the NEC 1850X and the Samsung 191T.

Woops.. it's supposed to be RTWC (Return To Wolvenstien Castle)... So Im thinking I should go with the Planar CT1904N or CT1904Z, or maybe save a little cash and head down to the 18in. From what you guys have been saying the 25ms LCDs that some of you have reported here say that its a great monitor (Very little ghosting, if noticible at all, to no ghosting). I might just persue this a little further.

Mr.Sharky:

Just remember that the 18" LCD has a LONGER rise/fall time!!! Only the 17" & 19" monitor's have the 25ms time.

And to add, there IS ghosting on the 17.4" in Quake 3. Given that it's 25ms rise/fall time, you can expect chaos on a 18.1" playing fast paced games.

i have 2 15" panels (i wish i only had 1, then i have an excuse to get this 19"), a viewsonic digital and a Dell analog.. both 30ms rise/fall i believe. I play counterstrike a lot, there's no ghosting on either monitor. I heard digital panels are slightly faster than analog, because it takes a few ms to translate the signals.

Hoeboy: How bad is the ghosting? I've heard people say "you have to be looking for it to see it". Does the ghosting occur only on relatively quick "sweeps" of an area as you turn around quickly? Or you notice it if you are just running in the game?

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

My guess would be that the ghosting is there, and that you just get used to seeing it. Then you rationalize to yourself that it isn't there anymore, or isn't as bad as people say. But if you're used to a CRT and see a game on a LCD, you will definitely notice the ghosting. It may not be very bad ghosting, but it will be noticeable. Who's to say that after using the LCD for a few months you'll still notice it. I don't know. I like the crispness of the image on my CRT. When an LCD can be that sharp in motion, I'll get one.

Misubishi has developed a technology it calls "feed forward" that decreases the response time by about a factor of 4. It sounds pretty impressive but apparently, it will be at least a year before it arrives.
