i'm thinking of getting an 19" lcd real soon, along with half life 2 probably, and right now, i'm looking at the benq fp931 or the fp937 (i can't afford to get anything top of the line, so i'm starting from the bottom and moving up the price scale), both of those monitors have dvi input and 16 / 12 ms response time

but... everyone is unsure of benq's quality, so i'm wondering if there's any alternatives out there? (not that i have anything against benq, i just want some more choices, can't really find any 16 ms or less 19" monitor with digital input - in vancouver)

Why not get a high quality flat panel CRT instead? Dunno if that's an option for you but I haven't been all that impressed with the LCDs I've seen (pixels will burn out or get stuck) and I'm personally still in love with my good ol' fashioned Viewsonic flat panel. Just a thought...

come ON, man. anandtech just did a complete review of 19" monitors. even if you havent figured out how to work google yet, you could at least make an effort to do the research on the site that hosts these forums. i mean, honestly- would have taken you less time to click on the very clearly marked tab for "displays" than it did to register.

haha of course i read the review, but i live in canada, the choices are very limited here, like i havn't seen nu tech or planar lcds here, and the samsung 193p and dell fp2001 is around 1000 bux, which i can almost get 3 17' lcd, and another thing is, they didn't really review on how the lcds are on gaming (they're all 20 ms or higher other than the benq one)

The Anand review was a worthwhile read, but I'm finding conflicting info on the 25ms response time, with its split about 50/50 as to whether you can see a noticeable image smearing in games. I hate not being able to demo a monitor in person, but as usual I always find the best deals online, so no way to test out an LCD before buying.

Samsung 193P
Excellent monitor, completly worth it. A couple of friends were b1tching at me telling me I was stupid for ordering an LCD, it ghosts bla bla. Then when it arrived I called them all over just so I could ask them "what ghosting?" :D Bought it after seeing another friend's 192T, if you've ever seen one, take the greatness of that monitor, and multiply it by two. Not to mention this thing looks really nice sitting on a desk, and the finger-sensitive on "touch pad" (its not really a power button, you have to use it to understand it) is awesome as hell

The specs show that the monitor has 20 ms, you sure you dont see any ghosting?

the 19 inch benq is pretty nice.
Benq FP937S
for 600 CAN$, it's a good deal imo. benq's warranty says that 8 dead pixels constitutes a defective panel (I'm pretty sure). and that's for three years.

the current 20.1" panels are no good for gaming, dont trust the 16ms, it means jack, acutal test shows its slower than many 25ms panels

benq937 is a poor man's solution, but viewsonic 912b is better if u have some spare cash, its not too much more in canada, this place has it for 729cdn

Anyone else have suggestions for an 18 or 19 inch gaming monitor?

Viewsonic VP912b.

Uses a 12ms panel, which is also used on some other LCDs (I think there is a Sony one as well). It's priced $100 lower than the 193P, DVI input as well.

WuGahCha:

I agree; its difficult to compare response times listed by manufactured, since they hardly clarify. Some 25ms ghost terribly, others don't ghost at all.

I just bought a 19" Philips 190S5FB from Newegg and it kicks butt. 12ms response time, sharp picture, easy to use menu and best of all, the quality and performance rivals that of monitors in the $600-$700 range. It does not have DVI but I've used it with my GeForce 6800GT and my Radeon 9800 PRO and this baby performs. For around $450 I think this is the best bang for the buck I've found.

19" Philips 190S5FB is pretty cheap in canada, saw one for 500cdn in tigerdirect.ca

for games, i think it's a better buy than benq937, but analog only will hurt u in text work

but traditionally analog leaves more ghosting streaks than dvi, i dunno if the 12ms rating makes up for it...

viewsonic 912b is a very save bet for a fast gaming monitor, a lil more than 700cdn, check www.bbf.ca and use that to search, most stores are in Toronto area though.

keep in mind that 912b also pivots and is height adjustable, not sure about usb hub, and its very highly rated in www.pcworld.com (I dont really like those guys tough)

benq and that phillips are pretty cheaply build

I bought a Samsung 910T and this thing is great! I have not had any issues with ghosting at all even with a rated 25ms response time and so far it has given a crystal clear pic. You can pick one up thru newegg.com for around 425USD currently.

I have a Sony HS94P and I love it. A lot of people will say the newer Samsung is better but side by side I think the Sony looks better. What I don't like about it is the base it uses. You can't take it off. Also the bezel around the screen is kinda big unlike the Samsungs. I like the glass or whatever they put over the screen. It gives everything a more lively look. Everything else looks kinda dull next to it. I have not had any problems with gaming on it. I have played all types of games with it and they all look great.

A friend of mine has had a BenQ FP931 for a few months now and loves it. I have an FP731 and have no trouble gaming on it whatsoever.
