19" flat monitor with a small footprint?

Is there a quality 19" flat monitor out there that won't kill me in the desktop real estate area? My wife is bugging me to get a regular desk and I just don't think It will hold my my Samsung 900p. I've considered a 17" flat panel, but I keep hearing bad things about ghosting and tearing in games.

Can anyone help? Or will I have to resort back to a nice 17" CRT?

I have a Viewsonic PS790 which is a 19" with a 17" footprint. It is hard to find as they quit making them. There is one at pricewatch right now for $449.00. It's pricey but a great monitor. I have had mine for 4 years or so and I haven't had 1 problem. I am sure if you do some searching you can find others like it but as I said mine has been great. The only drawback is that it is not a flatscreen.

I have a KDS VS-19SN, and it takes up the same space as a normal 17" monitor. It's a shorter neck, so it will fit into smaller spaces. KDS has gone out of business, but you an still pick up this monitor for under $250. I got mine about half a year ago for $240 shipped. Hope this helps.
 
ya, i have the Samsung 955SL. 19" on 17" size depth. i wouldnt recommend this moniter tho. i'm on my 4th one in less than 14 months. i keep having problems w/ it and samsung keeps replacing it w/ refurbished units. i think they are just rotating RMA units. 🙁
 
What about the Samsung 900NF... how is it on depth? I see on the site that it is 17.x" does that hold true? I think my current monitor is about 19" deep. I don't know if 1.x" will really make much of a difference.

Sounds like you really could do with a TFT but alas looks like you have been misinformed to a certain degree?

Cheap TFT's with slow pixel refresh will do the above but if you get one with 25ms pixel refresh you wont notice any ghosting IMO FWIW.
Im currently using a NEC 1550M and it has 25ms pixel refresh, 300cd/m2 brightness and 450:1 contrast.
Its only got a DSub input, but im so impressed i would bet my pants i could not find any CRT with a picture that looks as good as this 🙂
Games look stunning, no tearing or ghosting and 2D is so much better than you will ever get with CRT IMO.
Best of all my eyes dont get fatigued like they did with CRT 🙂
If you do go TFT just remember you get what you pay for. If you buy a reasonably priced 17"er and then find your not satisfied you'll know why if you get a chance to see a really good TFT.
Only ldown side to a decent 17" TFT is that you really need to be looking at spending at least twice as much as you would on a really good 19" CRT if not more 🙁
 
If youve got $930 to burn i can highly recommend one of these - Viewsonic VG191 TFT
Ive seen one of these in the flesh and they are the cats whiskers.
You would never want another CRT after seeing one of these.
 
I am willing to pay the premium for a Good monitor... After all... It is one of the longest lasting components on any system. Heck, I still use my Sony 15" SFII monitor on another system. That was da bomb when I got it... Lets see... that was about 7 years ago...

Anyway... I don't know if I would need a true 19" TFT like the Viewsonic 191. Would the 181 or the 171 have basically the same quality? Maybe I have been misinformed about TFTs... I would love to see them in person though... and it is tough to find anything like that in this area.

Any help on TFTs now is appreciated... It looks like I just want to stay under 25ms response.

Edit: I found that the VG171 only has a typical response of 40 ms... but I can't find anything about the VG181

The Hitachi CML181 also looks good... rise and fall response times of 15ms! Anyone have any experience with this monitor?
 
That Hitachi looks ok but theyre stating both rise and fall which would mean 2x 15ms = 30ms pixel refresh.
You need to be careful of manufacturers trying stuff like this when looking at their specs as can be misleading.
If you value your picture quality then you should above all else make sure the brightness of the TFT you choose is a minimum of 300 cd/m2 - preferably 350, Contrast Ratio minimum 450:1, pixel refresh of 25ms maximum (or 15 rise/10 fall for example).
If you stick to the above stated specs you wont go far wrong.
Any less and i feel you may be dissapointed.
 
I wouldn't worry too much about a 350 brightness. LCD's are too damn bright as it is and I find myself turning it down anyway. Consider CRT's still have 100-200 brightness, it's not important. Contrast ratio is important, however. 25ms total response is great for many people, but still not good enough for everyone. The 25ms panel I tried had bad ghosting in 3d games. Make sure you either check it out before you buy or buy from a place with a good return policy. Picky people like myself will not be satisfied with any LCD for gaming at this point.

If he were to go for anything less than 300 cd/m2 brightness he will find what i did and that is you will only be able to get off white when viewing white backgrounds like in Word, especially if he turns down the brightness.
My NEC 1550M has a brightness of 300 cd/m2 and a contrast of 450:1 and IMO looks better than any CRT i have seen or owned 🙂
As for streaking - this is a common complaint of the MVA type screens as they have great pixel refresh but alas the afterglow is bad, hence the streaking 🙁

TSDible - you really need to go look at some TFT's in the flesh so you dont make the mistake i made when i got my first TFT.
If your looking for recommendations i can only recommend the 1550M which i now own and is better than anything else ive seen but alas is only 15". I only got the smaller size because i couldnt find a larger TFT at sensible money i would be happy with.
Choosing a TFT at the moment is a minefield because theres so much expensive crap on the market at the moment IMO. Not for the faint hearted if your buying blind 🙁

Dimitri - what model was that panel you owned? It sounds like you tried an MVA, yeah? My 1550M shows next to no streaking in Quake 3 so am wondering why you had problems with it?

 
Dimitri - I nearly bought an MVA till i heard of this streaking problem. They look great on paper too 🙁
Your right though - i reckon FWIW if you cant get a really high specced in all departments TFT then your wasting your time for gaming.
Im just in the process of RMA'ing for a refund my 1550V in exchange for another 1550M and am not impressed with the 20% restock fee im going to have to shell out 🙁
I wish someone who new what they were doing in the display department would do a decent review of all the currently available top specced TFT's. I read the one at Toms Hardware and wasnt impressed. Didnt exactly waste any time on it IMO 🙁

enough of the review of all the budget 15" LCDs....

We need a review of high end 17"+ LCDs.

All we have to do now is find someone to front the money or the hardware... 🙂
 
TSDible - If i were you i would ignore what people say on the net as everyone thinks theyre TFT is great until they see a better one in the flesh and by then its too late so denial sets in IMO 😀

If i were you i would ring round, pricewatch etc one of the above even if you dont keep it will give you some hands on and then you will have an idea what to look for compared to what youve just had chance to play with. Just explain your dilemna at buying blind to them before ordering, and tell them you will order one on the provisor that they will give you a refund if you return within 7 days of receiving with no restock charge, and you want this stated to you in email so that you have some comeback.
If the online retailers/shops wont do this for you then dont buy from them, its too much of a risk on an item like this. If they want your custom tell them they will have to meet you half way.

This is what im doing when i next buy a display. Once bitten twice shy.
 
How is the brightness/contrast of the Iiyama TFT? I used to sell their CRT monitors and I was always highly impressed. A little more money, but the quality always seemed to be great.

Anyone have this panel?
 
Goto to officedepot.com and look at the Phillips monitors.
The 19" is $250 and has "XtraSpace" design for a small
footprint...................Greg
 
I don't think KDS went out of business. Their website seems to be alive and kicking, and their website doesn't mention them being in chapter 11 or any type of bankruptcy. Anyone else know anything about this?
 
This seems to be a common misconception...

I think a portion of KDS went bankrupt... however, it is not related to KDS USA which manufactures the monitors... Don't quote me on this though.
