I am in the market for a new monitor, and would like to either purchase a Black 19" Flat CRT, or a Black 15" LCD Monitor. I am going away to college in the fall, so desk space and monetary value BOTH count. I am basically asking for your guys' opinion on what you would get. I play a lot of War3, and if I do watch any movies on my comp I can send them to my TV via S-video so video playback shouldn't be a issue. I will probably end up playing a lot of UT2k3 when it comes out.

I guess the question is pretty much what seems like it would be more reasonable? Also, are LCD's really that bad for gaming, or is it not really that much of an issue? I would really like to get a LCD because of space-saving and kewlness, and if I like it I would probably go out and buy another one around x-mas time to go to a dual-LCD-setup. If I get a 19", there's no way I could fit dual 19"s in a dorm :p

Gimme your opinions, and heck, gimme deals/suggestions if ya find em.

[BS mode] I think you should decide between gaming and college. But if you've already made the decision then go for LCD in case of 'college' or for CRT in case of 'gaming'. [/BS mode]

cool

PS: Just one hint: The advantage of CRT is that you can do both, gaming and college... :)
PPS: A second one: FPS on LCD is still not perfect, but for games like Warcraft it's enough...

15" LCD is kinda small. you can get a really nice 19" for the price of even a really crappy 15" LCD too. i'd get the 19" . same decision i made about 2 months ago. got a 19" short tube phillps for $140 instead of spending $280 on a 15" DVI gateway.

I would take a 19? CRT over a 15? LCD any day. I would find a way to make the CRT fit. Give me real estat for productivity purposes, when you are writing your homework papers you will want as much screen area as you can get.

Go for the CRT, even though it's big. For starters, it'll look better and play games better while providing more screen area AND it'll be a lot harder for any crackheads to heist. The LCD could disappear into a typical backpack - a 60 lb. monitor won't!

Oh look it's the illustrious DeafRef who loves crapping on other peoples' threads. For once he's actually trying to be helpful though...hmmmm...just don't mention ATI anyone!!

Anyhow, to answer your question, I bought a 22" CRT about 8 months ago instead of a ~15" LCD...and now I regret it! LCDs don't have the convergence/geometry problems that seem to plague CRT screens. The only problem that I've ever encountered with an LCD is dead pixels. The other advantage to using an LCD is that you don't need a good video card to get crisp 2D output **cough cough**...in other words an Nvidia-based card would look good in 2D for once. This only applies to displays with a DVI input, however. Oh, and another advantage. Since the LCD will probably be limited to 1280x1024 at the most, you won't need an incredible video card to get amazing frame rates in games. You can always get an awesome card if you want to turn AA on, but just about anything, even a Geforce 3ti200, will be fine for todays' games at 1024x768. Good luck.

i would probably pick a 19" CRT over a 15" LCD also if you plan on playing games. IMHO I think the 15" LCD screen is too small for games. And if you plan on staying in dorms, you'll probably end up doing most of your work in the library anyways like most people I know.

ugh, for the 15" LCD its hard to find DVI so there goes some of the advantages of 'better and sharper' display...

for 350$--price of a decent LCD like samsung 151s--i can get a Samsung 955NF or Compaq 19" with a Radeon 8500card... thats a helluva deal

the easiest way to get a DVI one is to go on ebay and buy a gateway fpd1510 or fpd1500

those are probably the only 2 reasonably priced dvi ones on the market, cost about $250 if you get a good auction.

i still wouldnt buy one, the viewing angle isnt that good either. my brother has one, and like the refresh rate probably people whine about so much, i cant even notice, but the things that arent good, are viewing angles, some colors dont comes out right , etc. if you are really concerned about space, just get a short tube monitor, even a 17" would be cheap and you'd still save money over the LCD. also nvidia cards arent nearly as bad as back in the tnt2 and geforce256 days at 2d. i used to never buy their cards, but my geforce3 ti200 and the geforce4mx's i've had have had just as good quality as the radeon 8500LE i tried out.

I've been using a Gateway 15" LCD for the past few months and like it very much, more than I thought I would. However, I am going back to a 19" CRT (Compaq P910), mainly because of the bigger screen area. If your dorm room is as small as mine was, I'd probably go with the LCD though!
