19" CRT

Who makes the best 19" CRT monitors? I have given up on the LCD idea, deeming them to costly and weak for games (may not be entirely true for the latest, but cost still applies). I am looking for a very good 19" black CRT monitor, where should I look? Origionally I was thinking NEC, but I don't rightly know who makes the best CRTs for gaming.

Thank you

best? i dunno, but frys has a nec for about 279 my friend has. very bright and picture quality looked fine to me😛 non scientific but whatever🙂 i had a g400, it worked fine until it broke, my 3rd dead sony.. so i hate sony. 'im biased.

they overcharge for their stuff generally anyways.

See is Dell have any P991's (unless they're on P992's now), they might have some black ones, I have a 2 1/2 year old Dell P991 now, works like a dream still, 1600x1200x32 @ 85Hz, no problems with games.

I'm looking for the exact same thing! I'll probably be ordering it tomorrow. I built a PC a month or so ago with a nice black case, and now I'm giving my old Dell and its white monitor/speakers/mouse/keyboard to my dad, and in turn he'll give his PC to my sister so she has one.

This Nec one looks good, free ship too:

Can do high refresh rates at high resolutions which is what you want for gaming. Shoud be a huge improvement over this crappy 17" Dell monitor with not too good refresh rates that I'm using. I have to use 1024x768 otherwise its kinda hard on the eyes.

yup, if it can't do 85hz at 1600x1200, its not worth buying. a simple rule

Uh. 85Hz is the sweet spot that manufacturers aim for when designing monitors. Idealy your monitor should run at 85hz for it's normal resolution. Since 19" Monitors are designed for 1280x1024 or 1280x960 they should run at 85Hz in this mode. 75hz at 1600x1200 would be common and doesn't make the monitor substandard by any means.

I would expect a 21" to run 85 at 16x12 though.

Also, just because your monitor can pull 100hz at a given resolution does NOT mean you should run it at that.

As for recommendations: I think Sony (which also does many Dells) has dominated the 19" market for a while. NEC/Mitsu would be a good choice as well but I think Sony really has the 19's figured out.

I really like my NEC FP series. It has two inputs (RGB and SVGA) and a button on the front to switch sources.

I would love it if it didn't hog so much desktop real estate.

I vote for a Sony monitor, the one I have is excellent, and I've considered buying a second. For a bit less, the Viewsonics are a good choice.

I just got a NEC 19" CRT VGA Monitor Model FE990-BK Black for around $200.
Maximum Resolution 1792 X 1344@ 68 Hz
aperture grille pitch: 0.20-0.24mm

I love it! No problems whatsoever. I would advise anyone looking for a 19" to consider NEC.
