I'm looking to buy a new monitor because my 5-year-old 17'' SONY G220 is starting to show it's age...I've seen many TFTs but - as i state in the title - I wasn't impressed at all so I'll go for a 19'' CRT...
I've made a shortlist with the following monitors:

LG F900P
Samsung 959NF
Viewsonic P95f+
NEC FP955
Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 93SB

Any experience - opinions you would like to share with me??Don't tell me to get an EIZO or a SONY!I know they kick ass but I'll only buy one if you're going to give me the price difference!! ;-)

Well, I can speak for a ViewSonic A90f+ which I own and it was affordable. Has a nice picture and good res.

I have always liked Samsung and NEC the best however.

To be honest I'm mostly between the Viewsonic and the Samsung but I've heard good things about the rest as well..The LG has very nice specs and the NEC and MITSUBISHI feature the Diamondtron tube which is supposed to be on par with the Trinitron from SONY (if not better)...

I would strongly consider the Dell "2001FP" flat panel...

Incredible picture quality, fastest response time of all flat panels for FPS gaming, and good price for a 20"monitor...check comments in forums... "you'll be glad you did"...

I just switched from a dell 1800fp back to a good ol' 20" Sony Trinitron CRT and am very glad I did.

Just cant beat a CRT for gaming.

No, I agree with you...I'm not even thinking of going TFT!I'll keep the CRT I'll get now for 2 years and I hope by then TFTs will be what they should be..

I would disagree on the whole LCD thing. But since your price range makes those out of the question anyways its a moot point. I would look at the Mitsubishi. I am not too familiar with the Plus line but I have 2 Diamond Pros (19" 900u and 21" 2040u) and they are great. While I think they look better then the Sony's (I also have a sony 15" of some sort and a 21" G520p) I don't know about the Plus line. But the Pros are great. The NEC may be the same thing basically since Mitsubishi bought NEC awhile back and many of their models are now the same, they just have different model numbers mainly.

While a Dell 2001fp would certainly smoke all the CRTs he listed, he's too narrow minded to look at one, and it would cost about 3x as much as the CRTs he listed. Anyways, I'd recommend a Sony FW900 for a CRT.

Lol, everybody keeps recommending stuff in the $700+ range. If you look at what he listed he is limited to more in the $200 range.

Exactly...Anyway all those TFTs are way beyond my budget right now!
And nebor I've been in this field too long to know that narrow-mindness won't get you far...Even a $200 CRT has a crisper image than most TFTs out there (at least the 17 and some 18 inch TFT models I've looked)...And let's not get into Response Time and the 16ms marketing crap companies feed the public.........

The only thing I find attractive about LCD's is their power consumption since my computer is on 24/7, and the monitor spends at least 12 hours a day on (not in power saving mode). I've actually been thinking about using my 2nd computer for most of the day to day stuff with an LCD, and use my main rig with my CRT for gaming.

I would disagree with you on this point. You may have been looking at some POS TFTs in order to make this statement. Likely they were connected via analog and not DVI. Yes LCDs cost more right now, but when you get a quality unit connected via DVI there is a crispness to the display that no CRT can match.

CRTs are better for FPS gaming due to their lower response time. This is the main trade off with LCDs. I can live with the difference because I work with lots of text docs and for this type of display NO CRT I ever owned (Sony G520P, Sony E-540, Iiyama Visionmaster Pro 510, Viewsonic PT795) came close to the sharpness of my 213T.

I understand LCDs are out of your budget, but you're saying things here that are misleading.

I'm not trying to lead or mislead anyone...Just saying my personal experience..I haven't seen any very expensive TFTs..Most were between $400-$600..An yes, I was not happy at all with what I've seen..None of the TFTs I've seen would make me miss my 17'' Sony Trinitron I use now..I use my PC mostly for games, watching movies and surfing the web so I don't think buying a TFT would be a wise choice for me right now..All other office work and programming is done on my laptop (TFT here)! So I try and combine the best of both worlds!!

But if you find a TFT monitor that has nice and warm colors, can work in more than one screen resolution with decent IQ and keeps it's quality despite the viewing angle, please let me know!!I think I'll stretch my budget for that one...!!
Until then, IMHO, TFTs are a smart buy only for people who do mostly office work and/or have a limited space and/or want no emissions of various kinds from their monitor...I don't know about you but I'm not going to be just another marketing victim...

Well, I got my 192t for $699. The colors are fine, IQ is great and I can view it from different angles. Though I mainly sit in front of it. It sits next to a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u (I think I spent somewhere around 1k for it when it was new) and I prefer the LCD. I game a lot as well. It works in more then one resolution to an extant. Native is 1280x1024. Some games don't have that and I'll have to run 1280x960 or something similiar. That looks great as well. The only problem I have had is one older game (Hearts of Iron) that only runs in 800x600. That looked bad. Other then that one title though I have had no resolution trouble. Everything else looks fantastic.

Do you mean Samsung 192T??If you are I have nothing to say...I just want to congratulate Samsung because I've worked a lot on a 172T and it's far from the ideal picture that you describe..Colors aren't as natural as my 6 year old Sony, viewing angles greatly affect image quality (get's brighter in the upper or lower part of the screen depending on how you move your head) and my brother (who has this monitor) only has an GF MX440 so it's hard for him to play any of the newest game in the monitor's native resolution unless he upgrades his graphics card..Anyway...Well done Samsung!!
