The CompUSA router is $29.99 and the cards are $19.99 and then add shipping (the prices are for delivery only). Total cost for me for a router and notebook card from CompUSA is about $59 including tax and shipping. Total cost AR for me at Best Buy is about $48 including tax on pre-rebate prices, $49 at Circuit City.
With over 100,00 members here, some have CompUSAs, some don't. Some prefer to shop in a brick and mortar store. Some prefer to order and have things shipped. Some might have Best Buy rewards certificates or Circuit City gift cards to use. Different deals for different people. What's hot for you is not for someone else.

I totally agree with allisolm. I would only do those CompUSA wireless things if they were FAR. I prefer the comfort of a bigger name in networking gear.

Hold on a sec...

They're not CompUSA branded (those are horrible, ask how I know); they're AT&T. Not the biggest name in wireless no doubt, but I've already used the gear and they work fine, with the same featureset/signal quality/range you'd come to expect from the other names. I gambled on these and won around Xmas time. As a matter of fact, I have had no end of headaches with Dlink, but call that the luck of the draw, if you will.

As said before, different strokes for different folks. In the same way allisolm pointed out that some prefer B&M/Best Buy/GCs/whatever, some people absolutely despise having to fill out one rebate, nevermind multiple rebates. Particularly when a comparable product can be had without the hassle. This isn't particularly hot for me, and I had a feeling that others might agree, so I posted. No harm, no foul.

CompUSA is the Walmart of compiuter stores (that's bad) and AT&T is most likely reboxed generic crap. If you are interested in saving every $.01 for bragging rights, go for it.

Why yes it is Johnny. D-Link is the premier brand and that's why it's sold at Best Buy and Circuit City. We would never sell a product that wasn't the best. Our top priority is selling you the best product you can get, not to advertise some crap to get you in the store and make the purchase in hopes that you forget to send in the rebate. We would never do that...

And Best Buy is the Macy's of computer stores???

I'm not trying to turn this into a holy war or anything. I just gave an opinion based on actual real-world experience with another product, whereas your response ("most likely reboxed generic crap") confirms that, at least in this case, you have none. And yes, my goal IS saving as much as possible, or else I wouldn't be on this forum.

I already agreed to disagree one response ago. Clearly others haven't.

I have heard that AT&T uses the same chipset as Dlink and Netgear and Airlink, Atheros. The products are essentially the same. I feel the only difference is the worksmanship (most likely the same) and the trust you put in the company to be around to support the product.

FYI: I have a DI 524 and it works but the wireless is annoying. The DHCP server releases the wireless IPs every 30-120 seconds. I even set it to give specific wireless devices on the network a static ip, it still releases the IP. SOooo when it releases the IP to my wireless device... it causes a bit of a hickup. Also the status light doesn't work like it is supose to, but Dlink's great Customer Service informed me that it is okay beacuse a hardware revision/ firmware update removed operation of the blinking status light. No biggy on that issue.

I like DLink... good brand, they just had a bad model, the DI524.

Which firmware are you using? Try downgrading to 1.03 from their web site. My father and I got some of these at the black friday sales and we both had this problem and both had success with this solution.

After reading about it here, I did the same. No more losing signal, and everything is good good good. Besides, you can pick up those extended antennas for d-link sold under radioshack packaging at radioshack for $10 (for 2 - there was an extensive thread about this). Now, the signal is awesome, ranging from 36~54. Before, it was hovering around 24.

For me, it had nothing to do with $$ or whether I hate Worst Buy or CrapUSA. The simple fact that the AT&T cards ONLY support WEP kills that from being ANY sort of hot deal. Why? Follow the link.

Just my 2 cents worth. I could care less people purchase. I just know which one that I'd tell my friends to buy.

I returned my Plug&Share deal today. By far the worst product for networking I have ever used. The security features caused the link to cycle up and down. The range was about 20 yards in the house. If I set next to the Plug&Share it worked ok with just WEP. But whats the point in that when I could just use a LAN cable. Pay the extra amount and Get a linksys.

Check out the reports at Here

The firmware downgrade seemed to help many people, but there have been a lot of problems with this router.

I am also one of the ones who got it during the BF sale - and have had a few headaches with setting it up with my Dell (i8600).

MAC filtering is shot, and there are some DHCP issues. Frequent disconnects and such are also a problem.

We're all hoping that a new firmware will fix many of these issues.....
