18v 1000Ma Power supply

My Altec speaker power supply is making a loud humming noise. I think the power adapter is going bad. Not having any luck finding a new one. Altec doesn't sell them cause its obsolete. Can I use a lower miliamp supply? I found one that is 18V 500Ma or is it more feasable to just get new speakers. This set is the AVS500 and they seem still to be in good shape. I don'twant to spend a lot of money on a home theater type setup.

Thanks,

Do you hear the hum thru the speakers or just in the PS itself? If you are actually hearing the humming thru the speakers, you may need to replace one or more of the filter caps in the amplifier itself (often built inside the subwoof).
. If in the PS only, you are right to try to replace it if the humming is audibly annoying. Have you checked at bgmicro.com yet?

The humming is out of the speakers. I thought the Humming was caused by the power supply. Can the filter cap be replaced, or is it cheaper to buy new speakers? If I knew the specs maybe I could buy and replace them. I checked B G Micro, They don't have an adapter that is compatible.

Thanks for you input,

Hard to believe you can't find a one amp supply. Look around and save your old power lead for the new supply. Watch the polarity.

And yes, if you can get at the filter cap, by all means replace it.
