180GXP clicks?

I had a 60GB 180GXP and after a few months of use, it started doing this thing: every once in a while, particularly during long hard drive thrashing sessions, it will suddenly *lock* for about half a second and then continue. by "lock" I mean it suddenly stops seeking with a loud clank, and then continues after the small pause

I was going to get that one rma'd but at the same time I scored a 120GB 180GXP or free, so I just started using that. same thing: after a few months of using it, it's started locking.

is this a problem? could it be due to the fact that I have no cooling on the drive?

Cooling shouldn't be mandatory for drives otherwise Dells and Gateways would have hard drive cooling too.

What's your FSB set at? Do you have PCI locks?

yeah, everybody knows the horror stories about 60's and 75's, but the 180GXP's have apparently no such problems

Well if its not dying, then I dont think you should have anything to worry about. I've had just about every IDE harddrive I own click at some point in time during its life (randomly, I may add). Although its generally a bad thing, I've also never had a harddrive die on me. Of course if this continues on a regular basis, I'd have it RMA'ed.

IMHO, if it's "clanking" then it's dying. I'd run a SMART tool on it (Google for it) or the IBM software for checking disks at a low-level and look at RMA'ing it. I've seen it at work before, and the drive I was working on died a few hours later, halfway through a Ghost backup :frown:

that used to always happens to my 40GB 60GXP

it used to happen occaisionally to my WD 80GB... now it doesn't seem to happen

my 40GB 180GXP seems to pause then click everytime it starts to seek, like if i opened a folder
