180GB HDD problem with win2k

I just bought an IBM deskstar 180 model running on ata133. When I installed it, win2k recognized it as a removable disk drive. When I tried to format it, it prompted me to insert a disk...what is the problem here? Is it the fact that the drive is ATA-6? I am running a gigabyte GA-7vrxp which says it supports ata133 on both its primary ide channels and on its raid channels, so I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated
 
Your drive is over 130 GB so the BIOS and Win2K both need large drive support.

Did the BIOS recognize the drive size? If not, you need a BIOS update or an IDE controller card.

Have you installed W2K service pack 3 or 4?
 
I have service pack four installed, and the BIOS recognizes the drive as 185.2GB. It just looks like windows installed the wrong drivers for the device, but I can't find a better match to give it
 
I just tried it from the my computer window by right clicking on the device. If there's another way, I'll more than gladly try it.
 
Look up Disk Administrator in Windows Help. I had to do this with a 250GB maxtor, but it's been four months so I've forgotten the exact steps inside Administrator / Manager.
 
I found disk mamagement inside administrative tools and used that, but it recognized my 180GB drive as a 128GB drive. What did I do wrong?
 
my other drives are listed partition layout and basic type, but this new one is classified as simple layout and dynamic type
 
I am also preparing to upgrade to windows XP. Should I hold off on this disc problem until after I have my system upgraded? Will windows XP have an easier time with this large drive?
 
Right now I've got an older generation ata100 maxtor controller card in my system which I was considering upgrading to the newer ata133 model, but this large drive is on my motherboard channels, not the controller card.
 
Hmm, if the ATA100 is new enough it could have large drive support, and if so an ATA133 card is a waste of money.

You might try (in manager) "re-scanning" disks, and/or removing the drive and re-scanning but I'm not sure what else to try. My FLAC music server is W2K + sp3 and it's running 2 x 250 GB mators with no problems, but I have them on a Promise Ultra133 TX2 not the motherboard.
 
Good point l33t dhude! I'd forgotten about the registry change since it isn't needed if you use a separate controller like the Promise.

for Win2000 it's Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 305098 (link attempt ) search for the ID or title (48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000)

The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:
A computer with a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed.
A computer with a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 gigabytes (GB).
You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters

To enable 48-bit LBA large-disk support in the registry:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1

Quit Registry Editor.
 
ok...followed the steps in the microsoft fix file, restarted the computer, deleted the volume from disc management, recreated, and the disc still reads as 128 GB. I am completely out of ideas short of buying a new ata133 card. Is there anything else I can do? Should I try XP before I go buy a new card?
 
XP is the same as win2k on this thing.

Hey.. I couldn't bother to read through the thread again.. What service pack do you have?.. And have you removed the volume completely from the system?

Try disconnecting it, boot, then connect it again and try. I think it took a while for my system to recognice it also for some reason.
 
I've got service pack 4, but the thing that concerns me now is it's already been formatted as a 128 GB drive...is that going to cause any problems when windows detects it again?
 
When I first modified that registry value for 48 bit lba, it told me to type in the value 0x1, but for some reason it would not allow me to type an x into the value field, so I had to copy and paste it in. When I went back to recheck this value, the text in the window did not read 0x1, it read 0. Could this be causing a problem? Do I need to change the value to 1 instead?
 
finally got it working. thanks to everyone for their help. one thing that still bothers me is that disc manager always creates a dynamic type on the disc instead of giving me the option of a primary type. I have to go in under partition magic in order to get the type of partition I want
