180GB = 130GB..

I just purchased an IBM Deskstar, 180GB. My motherboard/BIOS reads it as 185GB, but when I load up a copy of Win2k w/ SP4 integerated to install, it wants to partition the drive as 131GB or so (NTFS). So, there's a jumper setting on my drive to change it from 16 heads to 15, but I dont know if that'd do anything.. Would a program like Partition Magic allow me to make a NTFS partition that's closer to 180GB? Or maybe even something in the BIOS?

Thanks

It sounds like it might be an OS limitation...usually using a controller card (the 180GB+ ones usually come with one) let you get around limitations like that because the card handles everything. Sorry, I know it's not much help but that's all that's on my mind on this topic.

Thanks for the reply, sadly my drive didnt come with a controller card.

Hmm.. well, I installed Partition Magic 8, and running it in Win2k on my current hard drive right now, with the new one attached as slave. It shows up as 131GB, unpartitioned. I have SP4 installed now too. Would some setting in the BIOS do it, like changing access mode to LBA, CHS, Large? If not, in the morning I'll try a different setting on the actual hard drive.

You may want to try partioning it to a couple smaller drives.
As mentioned before it may be an OS limitation try searching the microsoft knowledge base

Read the technote linked above. You need SP3 or later and need to add an entry in the registry.

Yep, looks like I'll need to create an initial partition that's under 137GB when I first install Win2k, then after it's installed edit the registry and partition the remainder of the drive.

It's dumb though, since this install of Win2k I have has SP4 integrated, you would think they'd automatically support these larger drives, but oh well. Thanks for the help!
