I purchased THIS gtom newegg. Came in fine looks like it is in perfect condition etc. I pluged it in and when you conect any USB device tot he USB port it work... However for some reason out of the 4 LED lights the top left and bottom lights on constantly on. I won't have a MS to test out for another week but i do have an SD card along with MMC for palm but when inserted nothing happens, no lights, nuthin.
I am running winXP Pro and my mobo is a DFI SLI-DR.
What could be the problem? the box says NO drivers are needed if wunning windos XP!! but i tried installing hte drivers anyway but the cd is the biggest piece of crap i have ever seen! It trys to load 2 different dwt on auto run which my Dreamweaver opens up just to display a template with a bunch of pics of products that do not resemble fine from VIA, ULI, etc. There are 2 diff card reader folders under Drivers on the cd, i installed both and still nuthin
please help!!!!!!

I installed this same reader 2 weeks ago with no problems. It sounds like you have a definate hardware conflict from the strange way your drives are listed and behaving. I would uninstall your cd drives in device manager and reboot letting xp reinstall the drivers. You should not have tried installing the 98 drivers. Also make sure your motherboard usb headers are laid out correctly in their wiring scheme. The card reader uses the default pin setup but some motherboards do not set their scheme to default pin layout. This info is usually in motherboards manual and it will list the wiring scheme for its usb headers. I would try the unisntalling your cd drives first. You definately have a conflict. Its not the card reader.

the pin layout is the same and i know it is working and being powered since the USB dectects and runs any usb device plugged into the card reader. The drive isn't detected at all even in Device Manager. I am not exactly sure howthe cdrom removing will work but i am about to try it and will update with results

I tried to get an internal in-win card reader to work on a system with XP Home SP2 and only the USB port worked. A different unit of the same model works fine in my XP Pro SP1 system.

Are you by chance running SP2?

So the USB on the device works fine but the reader doesn't? Looks like the USB port uses one set of pins on the header while the card readers use the other. Did you check to make sure all the pins match up correctly on the Motherboard? Also, you might have one of those cheapy USB brackets laying around that add usb ports to one of your expansion slots and then plug into the motherboard header. Try one of those out, if the USB ports work fine on that then I would guess it is the card reader itself.

you are corret the USB uses 1 header while the hader reader uses its own half of the header. I cna't tell if the pins match up or not as the drive didn't come with a pin layout spec sheet and they are not marcked ont he header but since the USB half and the drive half are stuck together like 1 normal header and the USB port works i am asusming both are setup fine. Also i did have a USB expansion bracket conencted to these very ports before i removed it for the card reader and it worked fine.
I don't want to RMA it yet since the problem could be with my computer/windows and a new drive wouldn't make a difference

not quite lol tey break it down like this

Memory Stick Slot: Memory Stick, MS Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, MS Rom, Magic Gate, MS-MG Pro, MS-MG duo
Compact Flash Slot: CD I, CFII, IBM Micro Drive
Secure Digital Slot: SD, Mini SD (with adapter), MMC/II, RS-MMC(with adapter), T-Flash(with adapter)
Smart Media Slot: SM, XD

so really it is only about 5 different form factors, 7 if you count the minis

Actually, check and make sure the usb header connector for the card reader is wired right. The wires should be color coded so just make sure the card reader cable is wired the same as the usb one.

Ok, I just went through similar problems with a Foxconn reader. This worked for me, I had the problem with windows not having or installing the proper drivers.

Most of the usb drivers in my windows/system32 drivers folder were gone. I copied them from another xp computer into the non working reader computers's folder. This computer was reading the "usb mass storage" device as a DMHS1B Rev 5 DFU adapter whatever the hell that is, so I uninstalled it, updated the driver to usb mass storage and all is well.

edit: when in device manager don't look at drives, look at usb devices and isolate your device by booting unplugged and then booting plugged in. If the usb drivers are hosed, it may not display properly in drives.

Same symptoms; all of my other usb devices worked fine including external hard drives, scanner, printer, wireless usb adapter, keyboard and mouse. Try directing unkown to windows/system32/drivers and I believe usbstor, see if it's there first, for some reason my computer didn't have the mass storage device driver, but two of my other computers did and when directed to this specific location once copied onto the system it auto recognized all the drives.

you'll only see the directory I believe not the specific file, I'm at the edge of my experience here.
