this loooks to be a very hot deal. The best price I can find on this is about $1750. One is for sale on egay and the bid is at $1401. Is there something I don't know here?

Well.. make sure the monitor has a good scaling/smoothing algorithm outside of 1280x1024. I have been working with 18-21 flat panels from various manufacturers (NEC, EIZO, IBM, Compaq.. etc) for the last 3-4 years and they are not all the same. Make sure it has a DVI connector for video as well. Some are very jagged when you stretch lower resolutions out.. some merely leave a black border around lower resolution settings. Chances are you aren't getting the highest quality panel here. You might get 3-5 blown pixels (not untypical).. we pay 2500 or so for ours and we still get a couple of blown pixels now and then.

My 2 cents

Tony

I was in a Costco yesterday and on the shelf they had box after box of 17" LCD displays for $899 - I hope this is a trend

I just ordered 2 of these from PCMall. It ended up cheaper than ecost because ebates gives 3% back at pcmall and only 1% at ecost and even though it was free shipping at ecost they were going to charge like $28 apiece for handling. Final cost 2029.11 - 3%= 1968.24 or 984.12 each. Seems like a good deal for an 18 inch flat panel. Pcmall and ecost must be the same company or they ship from the same warehouse because I noticed that they both had 1351 of these in stock also there checkout forms were identical.

Thanks for making that connection for us, Cowhide...I never imagined they might be the same company. I ordered a Syquest cartirdge from PCMall (MacMall division actually) several years ago; my first and last order with them - they stuck the cartridge in a box with absolutely no padding or protection.

Then last year I bought a Sony CPD-G400 Monitor from ECost and they included no packing slip or receipt, which Sony required for the warranty...when I asked ECost to provide me with a receipt, I was told "we don't do that". Both of these companies are the pits as far as I am concerned. I hope you have better luck with them than I did.

Darn... Spent 1000 for 15" IBM flat panel last fall. No more money for me. This looks like a great deal. It is analog... but that is debateable on whether it makes that much difference. But, since they are digital might as well get it digital in my opinion. I bet it will have about 5 dead pixels.

Oh, anyone notice the number of emails ya get lately from Ecost? :| They must be having problems too I suppose.

Callgirl scared me, so I got to looking at reseller ratings and they are not good. I called and canceled the order. I don't know what to do. I really would like this deal but I just don't know about this pcmall ecost outfit. I must say the guy I just talked to on the phone was very pleasant. Well I am going to bed, maybe I will reorder in the morning. I also noticed that the 3 that are selling on egay right now are all from some guy with a 0 rating and all 3 of the top bidders are the same guy with a -3 rating, something is strange about that. I would sell these on egay if I thought I could make 200 or more each on them.

I remember the same deal before for an IBM 18.1 LCD a month ago. Does anybody know the refresh time on this one? LCD would be great for me since I have little space on my desk..

edit: Alright, I did some research and answered my own question. The response time is 50ms, which is approx ~20fps, according to my friend. Does anybody know of a better time for 18.1" LCDs? In the case I play games, I would like it to be capable of more fps.

Cowhide: it wasn't my intention to scare you or anyone off this deal...just relaying [for what it's worth] what my own personal experience has been with these 2 companies. I was actually thinking of buying 1 or 2 myself to sell on e*ay but decided not to, only because of who the vendors are. That said though, if you have a credit card that have VERY strong protection for consumers when it comes to disputes (American Express and Citibank Visa both do), then you may want to go for it. I'll pass and wait for the next deal...and no doubt a lower price :)

yes I read that review, but that was when the monitor was close to 3 grand. I see now where the deal is only for 100 monitors and until tomorrow afternoon.

I bought the IBM one from eCOST awhile back. It is a pretty good monitor for the price. No dead pixels etc.. (I guess I was luckey :) ) I have been thinking of selling it though and applying that cash towards a decent laptop computer because I have been wanting one pretty bad lately. I wonder how much money I could get for it if I egay it? Actually now that i think about it, I would probably concider selling it for a loss rather than having to go through the trouble of egay. I suppose if anyone is interested they could PM me because this really isn't the proper forum to be posting this anyways.

----EDIT-----
Nevermind peeps, I Egayed it and recovered all my money. Heh, you gotta love Egay.....

the two companies don't necessarily have to be the same: they could just have the same distributor. chances are, that distributor is ingram-micro. staples, computers4sure, buy.com all use them.
