which date do you hold to be more significant? the formation of the first continental congress in 1774 or the declaration of independence in '76?
i favor '76, but only because im biased against the nation-State favored by the nationalists who dominated 1774.
lincoln, on the other hand, favored 1774 because the nationalists that dominated it fit his anti-secessionism. lincoln argued that the people are one consolidated nation and that they formed a State (the whole union) meant to be supreme over many different States... and that's dangerous not only because it goes against the pro-secession, non-nationalist Declaration of Independence, but also because Hitler made the same argument against constitutional confederalism in mein kampf.
lincoln also believed that rights come from govts because he said no State or group of States may secede unless the whole union agreed... doesnt that make him the antithesis of jefferson?
