Professors tell them. At least that's how it works here. Bookstores only have books for a course when the professor tells them what book and how many students in the class.

Yea, but if that were the case you would expect the campus bookstore to carry the books. How does work leak out to the other independent stores?

I doubt the school would tell them, that means lost business for their campus bookstore.

because the professors give them a list? or maybe they hire miss cleo?

maybe that 1200-page p-chem book won't fit into her magic ball

At my school, the professors tell the campus bookstore what they want. Then the campus bookstore distributes the list to others. Recently they wanted to charge a new off-campus bookstore over $1000 for the list, but after threatning a lawsuit, it was down to $75.

I'm pretty sure that in the past 5 minutes, you probably read my last post. What is the REASON why Profs would tell an independent instead of their own campus bookstore? I don't see any motive for that action.

Thanks, that's probably the best response so far.

The proferssors send "want lists" to the book stores. The book stores are owned by compnies like Follett who also control distribution centers. The stores that are not owned by the compnies like Follett have an independent agreement to buy books form them.

in my school it happens quite often that the independent bookstore gets orders exclusively from the prof, and the prof tells us to buy it outside. hmmm kickbacks?

One of my books was copyright 2005 and I bought it in 2004. The publisher was so embarassed that this edition came out like 1 or 2 years after the previous one so they made the copyright date later.

Unfortunately I have no idea what he is talking about. Please elaborate?

That's feasible, but for ALL Profs to do that? I guess in some schools that's how it works. Thanks.:)
