173P or 1800FP?

I've narrowed my LCD monitor choices to these two. I'm interested in opinions from anyone who has had a chance to work with both. Gaming performance is secondary to clear text. I do like the pivot on the Samsung.

There's a rebate on the Samsung through 2/28, which still leaves it $150 more than the Dell. Is it worth it?

$150 more? Where can you can get the Dell monitor for $500?

I just picked up another 1800fp after selling my first and trying a whole bunch of other LCD's because I thought there might be something better. I was wrong. The 1800fp is still the best monitor I have ever used.

I didn't try the Samsung, but I would venture to guess that I would of gone back to the 1800fp anyway.

Be sure to go here:
Cleartype web setup
and click on Cleartype web interface.

This will set up the 1800fp correctly. (The standard cleartype button doesn't detect the monitor correctly.)

Most complaints of the 1800's text is due to people not following this.

Refurbs at the Dell Outlet. They had them on sale for $450 a week or so back. Sigh...

IIRC, Cleartype actually degrades text on Win2K, which is what I use.

Thank you for the reply. There's a following for the 1800FP here that seems almost silly to ignore. Too bad I missed the sale a couple of weeks ago.

They might make a few of the panels for a specific model, but the 1800FP is mfg'ed by LG.

I'm sure you'd dig up dozens of comments on the 1800FP by using the forum search. However, feel free to browse through the 80+ comments in this CNET review.

FWIW I have two 1800FP's and yes, the LCD is really that good.

THE 1800FP has bright, very clear and crisp images with an excellent viewing angle. Text quality is crisp without MS ClearType activated. This monitor is extremely easy on the eyes. There is no ghosting noticed on videos or games in DVI, however there is some very slight ghosting in analog mode during fast-paced scenes. Be sure to hit the "auto adjust" button after you get to the windows desktop! Remember that 1280X1024 @60Hz is the native resolution & refresh rate. Gradations from dark to light are perfect (even though it only has a 350:1 contrast ratio, so naturally this surprised me). You'll want to run the brightness around 65 to achieve black blacks. Best of all you get a nice 3yr warranty.
