1700+ tbred troubles :(

Ok, so i have my athlon tbred 1700+ (b core) and i decided to try overclocking a little. for a while it was running at 166x12(2.0 ghz) just fine. but, after a while, my computer started to do random reboots or freezes. id be surfing thenet and it would lock. id be playing a game and it would reboot. anyone got any advice? higher fsb/lower multi maybe? oh, and the mem and cpu fsb are in sync.

my specs are

1700+ tbred
epox 8rda+
256mb pc2700
pny ti4400 128mb
300w psu (generic thing)

That sounds like you got a temperature issue. Check the heatsink for dust, and make sure its mounted on there correctly. If the hs isn't level, it won't cool very well either.

Running my 1700xp on an 8rda+ with 512 of crucial 2100 (256x2) at 12.5x166 with no problems. What brand is your RAM?

That said I am running a 400W Antec power supply. This may be the difference.

Also running a Radeon
8500le 128M overclocked also to a mild 300/300.

I would guess heat or your PS at this point w/ a Tbred B . What HS/FAN are you using??

I have a Vantec Aeroflow and REPORTED temps rarely go over 105F.

I use a Volcano 7 & generic pc2700 DDR.

I don't think it's the PSU, my brother did 12.5*166 w/ a overclocked ti4200 with the same PSU as me, the only difference is that he had a Giga-byte ga-7vax.

Did you raise your cpu voltage?

I need 1.725v to hit 2300mhz.

yea, ive switched around some voltages hoping that would fix it but that didnt seem to work. even at 2400+ with 1.75 volts it was crashing.

It was working fine @2000+ speed @1.55 vcore..
Now it doesn't even boot @1900+ @1.6

It may be your ram. You did say generic PC2700.

hmmm, it could be your PSU too. if it is a generic 300W it could be failing to keep the 3.3V and 5V rails up there after extended use. i have a barely used Enermax 365VE whisper (330W, dual fan, nice and quiet, extra long cables and gold contacts) i was selling in the FS/T forum for $50 shipped. you can have it for $40 shipped if you want.

well, its strange, i had it running at stock for a while till i could figure the bloody thing out, runnin 133/11 with 1.725 volts. yesterday my geforce 4 came in, (w00t ^__^) so i popped it in. ran 3dmark. then i thought i should uping my cpu to 2600+ again to see if it'll go, so i reboot, flip the fsb to 166*12.5 multi and i ran 3dmark agian. no problems whatsoever. no lock ups or rebooting so far. ill post back if anything happens

I had that OC problem you originally mentioned; worked at higher then wouldnt. It was after I changed ram. The ram ran well for the first week then deteriorated giving issues that seemed like cpu OC/voltage/speed problems. CPU tweaks didnt help at all. Ram tweaks didnt work either. I put in some higher rated PC2700 and all was well.

what kinda ram did you upgrade to? what did you upgrade from?

do you guys think if i got some corsair xms 2700, that would fix the problem? im currently lookin at a 256mb stick in the FS/T thread and its only 40 bucks and im thinkin about it. whaddaya think?

i think what might be causing your random reboots and what not is your ram timing....

i had the same problem as you.. my games would crash because my ram timings were too aggressive...

what do you have them set as in your bios? seeing as that it's generic, it probably can't handle anything TOO aggressive...

i would think that 2.5-3-3-7 should be good for your generic ram...

most good quality pc2700 or higher can do cas 2 ... the corsair should be good for you especially considering it's 40 bucks...

you may also want to look into getting some pc3000 instead... kingston pc3000 hyperX is good quality stuff and it's fairly cheap as well for a 256 stick..

it may not be necessarily ram timings.
it may be signs of SNDS cropping up in t-breds
but try lowering the timings......that may just be the problem, not SNDS(or STDS or the t-breds)
i remember a few months ago when people were pushing thier northwoods above 1.7v
suddenly, they died one by one but no one could figure out what happened
