I'm a newb to overclocking and i have some questions.

I recently upgrated my main computer.

Specs:
NFS-7 rev 2.0
Corsair 2x256 PC3500 XMS C2
1700+ T-bred B on Alpha PAL8040 with Antec 80mm Fan, 34 CFM
Geforce 3 64mb PNY
Promise PCI 133 IDE card
Leadtek 2000xp deluxe
Audigy 2

The voltage for the 1700+ is 1.8
The voltage for the memory is 2.9 and timings are 8-3-3 2.5
The other voltages are on standard. Right now im running the 1700+ at 11x190. A bit higher and windows becomes unstable or doesnt boot. Should i try increaseing the chipset voltage or the AGP voltage/bus speed?

Perhaps my PCI devices cause the system to be unstable at higher clock speeds? Or is my t-bred b just not able to handle higher speeds?

You PCI bus should be locked, so it's not your PCI devides. I'd say it's at it's limit, but that's not very high for a t-bred b... you sure it's a b? Sounds more like results from an A. Most B's will do 2.2 or 2.3 on default voltage.

Are these defualt voltages you are talking about? Because a "B" defualts @ 1.5v You have PC 3500 ram with cas 2.5 timings?

What is your current bus speed?

2.2 from a B on stock voltage? Thats a rare chip to do that. Overclocking is a hit and miss thing. Maybe your chip just wont go any farther. ALso what is your chipsets coltage set at?

my 1700 tbred a does 11x195 @ 1.75 or 1.775 (i forget atm)

i upped it past 1.8 and even dropped the multi to 10.5 and couldnt hit 200fsb

still, 2145mhz is a nice OC :)

I've got 2 Tbred Bs ,1 1800 & a 1700 ,at about 1.75v the 1700 maxes out at about 2.04GHz & the 1800 maxes out at 1.81GHz!:( ,though the 1800 has a rather modest HSF.
Btw the 1800s o/c MHz maxed out at the same MHz as the 1800 A I had before it ,but the B core runs about 5-7C cooler:)

I would say that most Tbred Bs can't hit 2.2GHz+ at default voltage

Mltsao
Your 1700 is at 1.8v vcore? ,thats on the higher end of the scale ,did you set it to that or is that what you found it at?

bjc112
Most Tbred Bs don't default at 1.5v but 1.6-1.65v ,latter B cores were set to 1.5v though:)

My 1700+ does 2.2g at stock 1.5v. (11x200) However, it won't go much higher no matter what I set the voltage to. Who knows why, but I'm happy with 2.2... ;)

mine does 2.4ghz:) on an ecs m/b to boot. its a dlt3c stepping. 1.5v.

this is no longer the top dog. jixhb chips can hit 2.6--2.7 on air. quite insane.

if you have other steppings, oc is not easy, and potentially not possible with certain stepping.s

Finally put my system together last night even though I DESPERATELY need ram, running an Asus A7N8X with a 1700 dlt3c, SLK800A with a Vantec, my first attempt at OC'ing. Only ram I have right now is 256mb Crucial 2100, and only one spare stick to boot. Right now this is running 12.5x152 at stock voltage for both CPU and DDR. 1.9ghz so far, CPU holds at 29C at idle, havent checked full load yet.

I am going to add another 256mb stick of 2100 and see what it can do, unfortunately that needs to go back into another machine for the long term, but overall I was seriously impressed with how well this OC'ed on one stick of good but not great ram.

Just did a quick search here and found this stepping was the highest reported OC for a 1700:

JIUHB0308XPMW
Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47Ghz) T'Bred "B"
JIUHB0308XPMW
ABIT NF7 2.0
Prometeia Cooling
Vcore 2.06V

3,114.20mhz

Stepping on mine is JIUHB0310XPMW :D

3.1GHz!? hmm ,that is definitley not on air cooling.
Btw you'll need to use a higher multiplier with that cpu ,let us know what it maxes out to:)

I think I'll just have to get another XP1700;)

How can I access the higher multipliers, everytime I go above 12.5x the CPU falls below 1ghz....... the mobo is the Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev. 2.0.

Still dont have the ram I really need, been out of town and will be for a bit, but did add another stick of crucial 2100 and it got up to 2.0ghz, 12.5x165, still stock voltage for both CPU and DDR, was stunned the crucial would run at that bus speed, any more it wouldnt post, great results for good but not great memory.

An Athlon64 will not fit into any Socket A mbrd

Btw when I asked > Which model chips have those steppings? I was referring to their model speed ,e.g. XP2000,2100 etc.
So which models have the JIXHB code?

Yeah the Crucial PC2100 CL2.5 RAM is amazing stuff! ,I had it in my old KT266a rig & it went upto 152MHz CAS 2-2-2-6 @2.65v:)

To get multipliers above 12.5 on any XP chip below an XP2100 you need to break some of the L3 & L5 bridges!:Q ,this will then change the multiper range from x6 to x12.5 to x13 upwards.
If your brave enough & want to know more I'll post a link for you;)

checked out a few of the links, but still a little confused, if I chose the highest one possilbe for this CPU what would be my other possible choices left all the way up to that maximum?

I would prefer to be able to keep the FSB maxed out first and foremost....

Looks like it would be cutting all of them and possibly getting the option up to 24x.... ? Of course at 200mhz FSB thats 4800mhz. The mobo only shows up to 15x as an option, is that the limit for the board or this chip? What would be my choices between 11.5 and the max?

xp1800 retail box axda1800dlt3c jixhb 0329 tpwm this is a DLT3C 1.5v cpu 65$

is this one of them? google shows that as an 1800 stepping code, that one was just sold TWO DAYS AGO.

XP1800 retail ,ok I'll keep a look out for them ,though here in the UK its rare that many suppliers will show the CPU code

Hmm , Ebuyershow the XP2200 OEM as the DKV3C ,is that Tbred B? ,£50 isn't bad:)

Re your multiplier question ,as I said earlier ,if you break some of the L3 &/or L5 bridges this will shift the multiplier range from x6-x12.5 to x13 upto what ever your mbrds support. So once you've done this mod the ,lowest multiplier you'll get is x13.Unless you rejoin the bridges again afterwards with silver paint

people are getting jixhb's from frys:p 1800+m/b retail cpu combos seem to have some results. ~70bucx

Wish there was a Fry's close to here, their combo deals are great, personally have had no trouble with 3 ECS mobos so I would have jumped on those. Will they ship?
