Okay... 1700+ B or the 2500+ barton?

then what mobo? nforce Abit or Asus?

What ram? Is it okay to save money going with cheaper and slower ram? if so what can i get away with?
with ram should i go with lower cas latency, or for faster ram? like 400mhz ram might be 2-2-2, while 434mhz ram is like 2-2-3.

What heatsink should I go with? I'm thinking at ThermalRight SLK-800a with the 80mm Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 2. But if there a HSF that is better/same for cheaper?

Ummmm I think that is all.

i'd go with the 2500+(since the price has dropped considerably) with an Abit NF7-S Rev 2.0 and PC3200 low latency RAM
as for heatsink, the SLK-800A+thermaltake smart fan 2 is a good choice

ABIT NF7-S or the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe?

abit sounds like the way to go. but some ppl say asus also works. does anyone think the capacitors on the abit board might be bad... like on a lot of other abit boards?

BTW, will this setup...

$142.50 Corsair XMS3200 DDR Memory 400Mhz 512MB CMX512-3200C2
$120 ABIT NF7-S V2.0
$72 AMD Athlon XP1700+ 1.47GHZ 384K 266 Tbred (TRAY)(JIUHB:0310XPMW)

$334.50

... and me buying a $150-200 video card when HL2/Doom3 comes out be good enough to run these games well? I upgrade every year and a half to 2 years.

An overclock may be required, even expected, if you go with the 1700+. But I would go with Asus...Maybe just me, but my A7V and A7V333 are ultra-stable and run fast.

i have no problems with my abit nf7-s 2.0

no bios corruption or anything... only thing is that that SATA raid stinks... but i hear it's not just an abit thing... asus has the problem and so do some of the p4 boards with sata raid...

the abit has most of the bells and whistles of the asus (minus the dual lan) and is cheaper...

btw... the capacitors that are around the socket have been cleared in the 2.0 version of the board... so you can put a nice fat heatsink like the slk800 with no problem or a water block like me! :)
