OK, but seriously - they send a roller-coaster car on the tracks every 1 or 2 minutes right? And the coaster was probably at that 1 spot to kill him for 1 second out of every 2 minutes. Isn't this something you'd look out for if you were in a *restricted* area?

Trick question. You don't go into the restricted area at all.

I dunno. If my wallet or something very valuable fell (which it wouldn't because I use buttoned cargo pockets for that sort of thing) I'd probably go for it. However, I would be intensely alert to the roller coaster's movements, and how I could avoid them, and I'd plan the route before just jumping over the fence. What this kid did is tantamount to stepping in front of a speeding train. Intentionally. (he was trying to grab someone's legs? WTF morAn.)

And I can't believe this hasn't been said yet:
Experience probably made his head spin for a moment there.

I don't feel sorry for the kid. I feel sorry for the people that had to see it.

Common sense, would have told him to talk to a park representative and see what they could do about it, but then I don't think they would stop the ride to look for a wallet or something, maybe only after closing when the roller coaster was shut down, so the kid probably decided to jump over the fences and look for it himself, bad mistake.

On the other hand, if he jumped over the fences just to touch the roller coaster or something else that idiotic, then he's up for a Darwin award.

A couple of stories are flying around.

1) that he losthis hat and was trying tor ecover it.

2) that he was trying to play a practical joke on someone that was one the moving coaster.

What an idiot. I used to operate a rollercoaster at a local theme park and there was a safe and proper procedure to get lost items back from the restricted area. We would wait until the end of the day, and after doing a proper lockout/tagout, we would have one responsible employee go and get the lost items. Did he really need his hat (I'm assuming it was a hat, that was the thing lost all the time on the ride) THAT badly? I doubt it.

Unfortunately, the joke is on him.

I'm sure he knew he was headed for trouble.

You hit that nail on the head.

I bet that the park's legal problems will be coming to a head.

unfortunately, legally speaking, that family doesn't have a leg to stand on

Well they seem to have a spare pair of legs sitting around doing nothing now.

That sealed it. I'm going to hell.

Well, we do know the entire family doesn't have their head on straight.

Yep, I'll be there with you in hell.

That punk should have should have quit while he was ahead. It's not like this huge ass machines are toys. Nobody can help you fast enough or give you a heads up, and no one will be able to hear you scream.

I am sure people will joke irreverently about this too, with statements like "check this clip out, you'll laugh your head off!" and probably start joking about other things as well, like 'how do you save a drowning lawyer? - you take you foot off of his head.'"

Shame really that so many headstrong people are trying to get ahead socially in life to the determent of the feelings and ethics of others
