17" vs. 19" LCDs

I've been looking for a new monitor for a couple of months and have wondered what difference there really is between 17" and 19" LCDs running at 1280x1024 (1600x1200 LCDs are too expensive). Does stuff just look slightly bigger? I went to a store to try and compare the two sizes, but they really seemed the same (there weren't two right next to each other, though, so pictures might be appreciated).

I'm still young, so having stuff slightly bigger won't matter as much to me as the price difference between the 17" Samsung I'm looking at ($203) and the 19" Hyundai ($375).

at the prices you listed I would more quickly get 2x17in displays for only about 50 more than 1x19in. but I'm of the opinion that the only logical choices are 17in, then the next choice is the 20in 1600x1200 panels. 19in at 1280x1024 is way to low of a resolution.

I actually prefer the better true resolution of the current 17" LCDs. I don't want a 19" with nothing but bigger pixels.

I'm waiting for the day of 17" 1600x1200 or 1920x1440 monitors. But because of how poorly windows deals with high DPI fonts, it will be a while before that happens. I just hope longhorn has significantly better font handling capabilities, so the door is openend for these kinds of real resolution improvment.

That also came to mind for me. It's just that everywhere I see people harping about 19" LCDs, when they have 1280x1024 resolutions, so I wasn't sure what was so special.

I also thought about getting that 21" Gateway CRT for $200 a couple weeks ago, although I wasn't sure if it would fit on my desk or not.

well people like them for gamming since its not as hard to drive 1024, but for actualy non gamming use I prefer 17in or 20in

Yeah, 19" just gives you a "magnified" view of the same resolution. You can achieve much the same effect by just moving a 17" closer to you (but then, you can do the same with a 19", and it's still larger). If your eyes are good, the 17" should be fine.
