I'm getting some really odd problems on my 17" ViewSonic CRT monitor.

First of all every so often I hear this eletronic clicking sound with causes the screen to Dim and shrink for a moment then it goes back to normal. Its more prevelent for the first few hours when the monitor has been on..
second the sides of my screen are not straight, they curve in and out depnding on the contrast intensaty of a area..

I've tryed the Monitor on a few computers, and verfyed its not a video card problem. I have the monitor on a noise reducing surge proctector, and I havent been getting any noticable power surges. I picked up the Monitor drivers from ViewSonic website, but they didn't seem to do anything to help.. the monitor seems to act the same no matter what refresh rate I set it to or what resolution from 800X600 to 1280X1024.. anyone have any idea's on what the problem could be?

Hi. This sounds like it could be a problem in the horizontal timebase. Speaking generally about TVs and monitors, there is a circuit which corrects the scan to suit the CRT, called "S Correction" . The distortion of the picture suggests the problem is here. There is usually a high voltage rated capacitor connected in association with the scancoils. It can break down under load, and possibly trip the power supply, thats the clicking noise. If this is it, repair it quickly, it could cause damage to other parts of the line output and or power supply. Hope this is of some help.

Hmm, I'll have to get a eletronics shop to check it out..
The picture on the Monitor also started throbbing. were the picture would move noticablebly in and out.. for a bit.. I hit manual deguass and it stopped it..

Its the Degaussing circuit kicking in.

Do you have any Speakers or Electronic equipment nearby?
That would cause it to kick in and the distortion you mentioned.

The curving is call PINCUSHION and can be adjusted through the
onscreen menu.

nope its not the pincushion.. unless pincushon suddly makes the side of the screen squigly like Multiple Large "S" depending on were the screen is light and dark..
and deguase sounds compleatly diffrent.. this is a electric crack like click, not the click humm click of a degause..

and why would it due the same thing on mutiple computers? the other monitors don't do this.. from old 15" to new 17" monitors..

Hi Good idea to take it to the repair man if you cannot do it yourself! If it was the degauss coming in, you would see moving random colours for 10-15 seconds while the degauss is working, but its very unlikely to be that. Its controlled by a posistor which works at mains switch-on,(not from standby) or when you start it manually. It either works, or blows the mains fuse. I still say S Correction capacitor or related. More current is taken when the picture is bright, so this puts everything under a greater load, so if something is weak, thats when it will break down and trip the psu, that clicking noise.
