FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (CNN) -- A Fairfield University graduate held 17 students and one faculty member hostage in a classroom on campus Tuesday and claimed to have an explosive device, police said.
Five other hostages, all female students, were released.
The hostage-taking began around 4 p.m. during a religion class at Canisius Hall, which houses administrative offices and classrooms. The rest of the building was evacuated.
A police official said the hostage taker had "what he purports to be an explosive device."
"It's just an emotional situation," said a spokeswoman for the offices of student services at the Jesuit school of about 5,000 students.
She said city and campus police were on the scene. A police spokesman said the campus was evacuated.
"It's a very calm scene, but obviously very tense," said Doug Whiting, the university's assistant vice president for public relations.
