17" or 19" monitor

I am very much in need of a new monitor. I want either a 17" or 19" and if possible under $300. My case is silver so it would be nice to get a silver monitor but that's only if it's available. Also, I want a flat panel but I understand that they are not as good for gaming. Is this true? Any ideas?
 
Samsung makes a decent flat CRT (tube) 19" monitor for $199 at Best Buy - maybe $180 if there is a sale or rebates. It has a silver front and sharp picture. Most experienced gamers will tell you that CRT's are best for gaming if you are picky about the picture.
 
its ture and really sucks its that way becuase having a 21 inch monitor crt on your desk is such a crappy thing since its SO HUGE! and gives out alot of heat.
I really want a widescreen 21-23 inch lcd but they are so damn expensive and yes i mostly play games so im scared for that reason too. But haveing big tubes sucks too, and summers are a killer with the heat.
 
Yes I already have a 17" CRT and I don't like the fact that it's so damn big. That's why I want an LCD Flat Panel. I don't mind about the gaming that much. As long as the game looks decent I'm ok. I just don't want a huge monitor taking up my desk space.
 
19" CRT is the way to go. Lots of screen to work with and the additional cost for the 19" over the 17" is minimal. For around $300, I know of no 17" LCD (19"CRT=17"LDC) that could come close on price for performance. NEC, Samsung, ViewSonic among others are all solid. I would recommend shopping the manufactures sites, find the one you like, then go shopping on Price Watch or even Froogle. I'm sure you can find something that will fit your needs and have some cash left over.

Opps. Nevermind. You're looking for a 15" or 17' LCD. This one over at Newegg is nice enough.

I read/saw somewhere that Samsung has made a thinner CRT monitor which looks like a really thich flat-panel.

Update: Here's where I saw it.

No idea but I can only imagine it'll be cheaper than LCD.

EDIT: Followed more into the link & found out it's around $1000 for a 32-incher but it's listed as a CRT TV so who knows how much the innovation will go for if/when it's utilized for computer monitor use.
 
I got a NEC FE990 as my first 19" monitor, never again will I even look at a 17" unless it's an LCD, or something else that just astounds me.
 
I heard about those thinner CRT's a couple months ago. The idea is that they will be a third thinner than regular CRT's and also a third of the price of LCD's and plasmas. That may be true for TV's, but not sure about it for computer monitors.

Earlier, you mentioned that you like to play games. You can ignore this bit of advice if you like since I am only repeating what I've heard or read, but the problem gamers seem to have with LCD is the response time (sort of like a refresh rate). One writer at the Inquire stated that LCD's were great for looking at stills, but lousy for watching anything with high motion. From laptop computers I've seen, there is a ghostly trail behind the mouse which can probably be attributed to this ghosting effect (slow response time). I've heard that LCD's are improving in this regard, but that will be true of the cutting edge expensive ones, as a general rule. The cheaper ones are probably slower, so you will have to do your homework separating the grain from the chaffe.

Yes, CRT's are big, but if you want the best (moving) picture for your money, they seem to be the way to go. LCD's still have a way to mature.
Also, I've seen some LCD's with blown pixels. The pixel looks bright grey and is annoying as hell, sticking out like a sore thumb. Check with the seller about the warranty and if they will repair bad pixels i.e. if its covered.
 
Thanks a lot for the help. I'm leaning towards the ACER AL1715EWM 17" LCD Monitor. Not sure yet though.

I totally agree. Some guys earlier were bitching and moaning about the size, bulk and weight of the large CRT's - which is why so many are rushing to the slim sexy LCD monitors. No doubt they are slim and sexy, but from what I've seen, they still have a ways to go for gaming. Yes, you can get the 16 ms or faster and that makes them much better than the older ones. I watch my daughter play a kids game on my ex's laptop a year ago and talk about blurry - and that was a kids game!

The screen above is similar to the specs I got on my Dell 19" flat LCD which was a free upgrade:

I'll vouch for Samsung's CRT units. I have a 19" 900P (big heavy mother) I bought over 5 years ago, and the thing is still like new. Vivid and sharp, warms up quickly. Could be the best piece of PC hardware I ever bought.

I agree - my 17" flat Samsung CRT is getting a bit tired (4 years old) but I hope it holds out until these new thinner Samsungs come on the market for a reasonable price! I want one!
