Hi,

I am looking for a new monitor. I want a LCD because i only have tiny little space for a monitor. If i have more room, i will definitely get the NEC FE991SB 19" ( i believe it is the best so far for a CRT monitor)

but when it comes to LCD, i have no experience.

I heard that so far only 17" LCD has 16ms response time.

but 17" looks a little small to me. a 19" crt monitor has 18" viewable size, so i tend to get a 18" LCD (cuz it also has 18" viewable area)

I saw the Samsung 151S, actually i don't quite satisfy with this model. SO many shadows. the text is not clear. So damn much shadows when playing FPS. however it is cheap. so i guess i get what i pay.

if i get a 16ms or 20ms monitor, will the shadow problem be solved?
if playing a lot of FPS games, will 20ms satisfy my need?
I haven't play any FPS on a 20ms or 16ms LCD, so i can't compare.

when it comes to LCD, does screen resolution and refresh rate matter? i can see most of the LCD has a 1280x 1024 @60hz will this enough? current on my 17" crt monitor, i am using 1152 x 864 @ 85hz. so can a LCD do this resolution? (a 17" lcd has bigger viewable area than my 17" crt)

I will DEFINITELY play many FPS games(Halflife 2, Doom3,...) and Word pocessingin the future. so is LCD a good idea? or should i stick with CRT monitor no matter what?

thanks

For an LCD 60 hertz is fine. LCD's refresh differently and 60 is the max for all I think.

I went from from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD (Viewsonic VP171B). I don't notice the size difference as the 19" is actually a little less than 18 and the LCD is 17. You are better off with a 16ms response time and a 17" (in my opinion).

I also went from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD (Viewsonic VP171B). Glad I did!

What about the resolution issues. The larger LCD screens have a high native resolution like 1200x1080 etc... what about games which play at 1024x768 or 800x600? Don't those have to interpolate to the native res of the flat LCD? And doesn't that make them look funky?

My native res is 1280 x 1024. When I play soem games like CS at 1024 x 768 looks fine to me. ^_^

LCD's you want a fast reaction time. Any LCD over 15'in is great for gaming, IMO. Samsung's are also good makers of LCD's.

i can see that the Viewsonic VP171B is the most expensive 17" LCD monitor.

How does it differ from the NEC LCD1760V? also 17", 16ms.

but there is ~$100 different
