17" or 15.4", does it make that much of a difference??????????????

I am really torn between purchasing a laptop with a 17" monitor and a 15.4" monitor, this laptop will be used to surf the net, movies, email, games and streaming. Which size monitor do you think will be best? Thank you.

just how portable do you want it to be? 17 is nice, unless you plan on lugging it around with you everywhere you go

I'd NEVER get a 17" notebook/laptop. No idea how you can call it either with that sized screen. I mean, at work I have a 17" LCD (ok, two actually). The size of that thing is just too big in my opinion.

Now if you want a desktop replacement it is pretty good, but for a modicum of portability, get a 15 or 15.4" screen. All my opinion of course. 🙂

EDIT: Your post makes it sound like you want a monitor in addition to the built-in display, but I'd guess by the 15.4 and 17" topic that you do mean the actual LCD on the laptop.

Because resolution is semi-independent of screen size, this question depends on your eyes and usage profile as well. You don't want too many pixels/inch for comfort at native resolution; but you want as many pixels in as small a screen as you can comfortably get away with(unless you are basically just buying this as a wannabe home entertainment center for your dorm, or similar). I'd personally be much happier with the 15.4, over the 17; but it depends on your eyes.

if it's not your main rig and will be moved around a lot, you'll find the 17" much too big and the battery life will suck. otherwise if you keep it at your desk or where-have-you plugged into the power adapter, go 17" (why not?)

is the laptop going to actually ever go on your lap(or will it sit on your desk)? if so, you will soon realize that 17inches is alot to try to fit on your lap 🙂

17" laptops defeat the purpose of buying a laptop, since they are too heavy & bulky.

The biggest i'd ever get is 15.4".
