17"monitor: resolution vs strain

Currently I have a Viewsonic A70 17" monitor. I've had it for 2 years and really have no complaints given its a bargain monitor. I'm looking into getting a new professional grade and I'd prefer to get a 17" (19" is just to damn big). The problem arises when you hear the reason I want to upgrade: 1024*768@85hz is just to large. I like 1152X864 more, but running this resolution @75hz REALLY hurts my eyes -I can take it for few hours, but it gets to the point I can no longer look at my screen without feeling pain. I have nearly 20/20 vision and own a pair of glasses "just in case". Ever since I bumped everything up to 1152 that "just in case" has turned into defacto! I feel this is affecting my eyes and I need all the vision I can get.

I'm thinking about taking the iiyama plunge and getting the
iiyama 413. Before I pick this monitor up I want to clear up some doubts:

1.Will running in 1280*1024 @85hz kill my eyes on this monitor more / less than 1152*864 @75hz on my current viewsonic?

2.Are there any alternatives to the iiyama you would recommend that are NOT made by EIZO ?

BTW - I am running this monitor on a Radeon 7500, and 1024*768 @85hz doesn't cause me eyestrain.

Thank you

If it's painful why do it? Is real estate worth pain? Whatever.
Anywho, if 1152 is the size you like on a 17" then run that. It will look better at a 85 or 100hz refresh rate than 1280 will (on a 17 anyway). Hell, even my 19" doesn't do 1280 that impressively. Stick with what's comfortable, then jack up the refresh rate as high as it will go without degrading the image.

800x600 is the max I would use on a 15"
1024x768 on a 17"
1280x1024 on a 19"

See the pattern?
And I can't use anything below 85 Hz =)

VBboy:

i think your suggested resolutions are a bit too conservative

i'd suggest these maximums (not necessarily ideal though. just the maximum tolerable resolutions)

1024 x 768 15" @ at least 85 Hz
1280 x 1024 17" @ at least 85 Hz
1280 x 1024 19", 1600 x 1200 if you can run this @ at least 85 Hz

800x600 and 1024x768 are a bit too big for me for 15"/17" respectively. i have a Sony CPD-E100 15" @ 1024x768 85 Hz and a Viewsonic PT775 17" @ 1024x768 @ 100 Hz

🙂
