Yeah. I'm sticking with my PBG4 15" for now, though a MBP15" might be nice. I'll probably make the transition to a 15" MBP in a few years after Adobe has released CS3 as universal binary and Apple has refined their MBP line a bit more.

I regret to inform you that discussion of Apple laptops comes up regularly here, and that many people are interested - especially since Intel-based Macs can now dual-boot OS X and Windows.

The 17" will still be too big for many people, but it's probably the lightest and thinnest 17" laptop out there (6.8 lbs. and 1" thick). It's a nice trade-off compared to the M1710, which is better for gaming but also much more bulky. A better video chipset doesn't mean much to a road warrior who would rather not kill his shoulder carrying his computer on a day to day basis.

It's a nice laptop and actually a better deal than an equivalently configured 15" MBP. It definitely smaller than my old 17" Inspiron which I was toting to and from work each day. However, the walk from my car to my desk probably isn't a good indicator of it's totability. If I were still in school and had to take it to all of my classes it'd be a different story. The price is getting kind of high though, I wish they'd lower all of their MBP's by about $300.

And tfinch2, people do care. There are a lot of Apple users here, including Anand himself. So why don't you stay in OT like a good little boy.

A nice looking notebook with a great deal of Eye Candy...but...seemingly way over priced on a performance basis. I have a hunch the M1710 at $2600 base price would smoke this Apple offering (ergonomics aside). But...it is very pleasing to the eye and cute in a girly way!! For a $1000 less there are a lot of offerings in the laptop world that would rival the Macbook pro on a pure performance basis, once again, without ergonomics as a consideration...OK...let the flaming begin!!

Don't worry, I won't flame. :p

I agree that the M1710 would be faster. However, performance isn't the only thing you buy when you get a laptop, and it's very unlikely that a laptop offered for $1000 less will beat a MacBook Pro (of any size). You're paying for Bluetooth, a backlit keyboard, a sudden motion sensor, dual-link DVI output, the remote for Front Row, and so on. If you don't find one or more of those useful, a cheaper system is fine. But it's not as though Apple just pads the price arbitrarily.

Also, "cute in a girly way?" Maybe if it was an iBook! The 17" MacBook is too big to be cute. It's more geek bling than anything else.

Your a true gentleman...its nice to be able to disagree in an agreeable sort of way, and yes, I agree there are some features offered on the Macbook that you won't find elsewhere.

Agreed, this forum is for discussion of all types of notebooks and SFF systems; different voices are welcomed around here, including Apple.

On the other hand, I would have to say that macbookPro is one of the most insipidly designed and generic looking notebooks I've ever seen.

I have to disagree somewhat with you on this.

I do think Apple was focused too much on reducing the thickness. We shouldn't have to settle for a 4X single-layer DVD writer (although I know for a fact that it's a question of reliability, not availability, that prevented an 8X DL drive from appearing) in a high-end laptop. I also wonder if the 1" thick nature of the laptop is a primary contributor to the excess heat some people have experienced.

However...

To call it an insipid and generic design isn't really fair. There's some very brilliant decisions in there, such as the location of the wireless antennas, the MagSafe connector, and so forth. Some of the decisions stem from the original aluminum PowerBooks: the keyboard is one of the best in the business, and the smooth design makes it feel easy to hold.

Also, if you haven't noticed, the MacBook Pro is the only laptop that looks the way it does. I'd argue that if anything, most other laptops are generic! There's a lot of black/grey plastic (or in some cases, metal) and fake chrome out there. What really distinguishes Gateway's systems from HP's, for example? Apple's design is minimalist, but you'd find it right away in a lineup.

The macbook pro 17" has a lot of new features that I dont think a lot of you picked up on... it features 3 usb 2.0 slots (as opposed to 15" mbp's 2), an 8x DVD DL burning drive, it can support a higher resolution external display, it has a firewire 800 port in addition to the firewire 400 port that the others ones have, and it has a longer lasting battery (68-watt-hour battery vs. the 15" mbp's 60-watt-hour battery). I Only wish they'd make a 15" MBP with these added features (esp. the battery and the 8x DL drive) cuz 17" is too big/bulky.

Yeah, I agree with you on the bulky part. I went into my local Apple Store the other day and the thing is HUGE. You'd think they'd widen the keyboard a bit or something, all that space is just wasted on the sides. I don't really burn many CD/DVDs so the 8x DL doesn't matter to me and I only have one firewire device and it's only 400Mbps. While having the extra USB ports would be nice, I'm pretty content with what i have.

The 15" can drive the same resolution the 17" can.

I can't comment on the battery, but I know the 15" MBP's optical drive is more a question of having a 9.5mm-thick optical drive that would run reliably. The story goes that the few 9.5mm 8X drives that exist didn't work well at the time of the 15" model's launch. The 17" doesn't have that issue because the internal space is large enough to include a more conventional 12mm drive.
